He would then remove his coat , casually shake it out and toss it to someone sitting close by to examine (this would be a nightclub/cabaret setting with patrons seated all around close to the area where he was performing). If you search on KZbin you can see this in a film of a much younger Howard De Courcy by British Pathe titled: Vaudeville Cocktail (1937).

I was very impressed the first time I saw him. I have almost all of his effects and believe me, most of it is fairly hard to do if you want to do it as smooth as Jay himself. Love the guy.
