This was one of the first solos I tried to learn as a beginner as something to aspire to. Don’t have it up to tempo yet! But I have to point out what an incredible example this is of solo construction. Paul takes one basic idea and returns to it several times with some contrasting ideas in between. I’m curious whether this was something he purely improvised on the spot or worked it out beforehand. Either way it’s genius

I agree. I'm working on this, and it's gonna take some time. But Paul is a superb pedal steel role model - he really does set the bar high - pun intended. 😉

I see you have a D pedal. What is that pulling. Mine only has ABC.

The 0 pedal is a B-Bb pedal. A lot of people have it on the vertical but combined with the A pedal it gives you an augmented without having to half the A pedal. Also gives kind of a 9th chord dropped down two frets from an open position. Travis Toy turned me on to it. Gives a couple slick moves.

Unfortunately KZbin shorts won’t let me turn it horizontal without it being super zoomed in on the middle of the fretboard. Not sure why it does that but oh well.

Something sounds so odd hearing the guitar without the other instruments. Maybe I just miss the steel guitar intro. Solid cover though.

Understandable. Pedal steel isn’t really meant to be played by itself without accompaniment.

I did one a while back but my rig has changed quite a bit. Currently in the process of converting to a Quad Cortex. Maybe I’ll do a video on that when I get it set up. In this video I’m just playing through a Positive Grid Spark Amp. Just a little practice amp that sounds pretty good and has cool features.

I don't play pedal steel guitar, but I've recently found out about this song by Wynn Stewart and absolutely love the pedal steel guitar part/sound. Your video has made me appreciate the mastery of the musicians even more - I'll have to go and find some more Ralph Mooney to listen to. Maybe I'll have to try and learn the pedal steel as it's such a great sound. Though I don't think there's much calling for such musicians in Suffolk, England where I live. Cheers.

Thank you for the kind words! I would imagine it would be hard to find people to play with over there, but probably not impossible. It's a challenging instrument for sure, but addicting when you finally start to get it. Ralph Mooney was an amazing player. Always love learning his style.

I changed some things up over the winter. Some videos I record just using my little Spark practice amp, but the main gear I’m using right now is a Sarno Earth Drive (if using distortion on a rock song), TC Corona Chorus (if needed), Nux Atlantic Reverb/Delay then using either an Evans SE-200 or a Milkman The Amp 100 direct or to a 15” cab external cab with a TT-15 speaker. I think this video was using the Milkman.
