Am watching and listening to the one one KZbin. There is much to admire: Jackie's singing, her back up both voices and musicians. Jackie's voice seems to have mellowed, softened since earlier vids. I like it better, easier on the ear and brain seems to accept the heartfelt words with more ease.

Hi, I was interviewed by Bluebell Newsreel back in spring 2007 about photography at the railway (I was age 13 at the time) but the footage was not published and I never got to see it. I was wondering if it still exists anywhere?

Don't agree it was 'ignorance' which was the founding and sustaining principle that kept people going on the Swanage railway. I recall a comment I heard many years ago, making the point that closing the line (from Wareham) was a big mistake -- and worse -- more like Luddite destructiveness. Which it clearly was. The point that was made -- relevant then and more so now -- was the holiday traffic and trade from thousands who came down South from the Midlands and further North, had been 'chopped off' and trashed. 'Ignorance' is pure patronising. People KNEW what they'd lost and there was clearly anger at what B R had done AND the way they had done it. Nothing motivates people more powerfully than being treated with contempt. Which is why, through thick and thin -- and there were a LOT of thin times at the beginning -- the pioneers held on, as epitomised by the lady who started the first petition to save the line. People could see the magnitude of what they were taking on. To use an analogy; people could see what they were facing in 1939. They had no idea how they were going to win. But as the saying goes; giving up was not an option. Which after B R's treatment of the line and those who relied on it, felt. Time and again history demonstrates the same principle.

So if this is the 2nd largest brick structure to Battersea power station, where does that leave the Ouse Valley Viaduct with its 11 million bricks.
@FarnhamTV7 жыл бұрын
I have a feeling that The Ouse Valley Viaduct has stone facings on some of its sections where as Chappel Viaduct is built using only locally made bricks.

I watched the first 10 minutes of this programme, and I remember thinking it was going to be good. Then it sort of lost its way, and was jumping all over the place. It was nice to meet some of the staff, but you could have featured someone from each department explaining their jobs. Why two guards, nice though they were? What was the young lady doing on the footplate? There was a golden opportunity for the driver to explain the workings of the loco, but he was asked merely how many engines the railway had, and then he quoted numbers that only a rail buff would understand. I'm not sure who your target audience is- the public at large and tourists, rail enthusiasts, or just the people on the railway itself? I think any one of those groups would come away disappointed. 60 minutes is enough time to tell a really cracking story, and I've no doubt you got some very good material, but the direction and editing has let it down. Sorry, but that's how I feel.

Ketches Halt: It is now closed... But what was there that the Railway deemed it worthy to put a halt there in the first place?
@jsptravels9 жыл бұрын
+NJPurling Nothing .. but once upon a time the Bluebell didn't even go as far as Horsted Keynes so it had to stop somewhere, there was Ketches Halt (intermediate) and Bluebell Halt (terminating) before it would reverse direction. At Ketches Halt you could get a lift back to civilization on the back of the farmers tractor.

They have to decide if they want to run to Wareham, or let SWT run a shuttle from Wareham. If they want to run to Wareham then they would have to fit their stock with the same safety equipment as main line trains, and have secondary door locking and become a licensed TOC to run on the main line. It would probably easier for the Swanage railway to lease some stock to SWT and let SWT run from Wareham as a shuttle. SWT isn't exactly flush with DMUs

One thing I noticed when I went to the Swanage railway and in the video was the amount of young people in the volunteer work force. Most probably the youth of Swanage. They like me at the Bluebell have seen through all this 'sad,' 'get a life' nonsense from school and now spend their time doing something much more worthwhile- and fun than playing video games and loitering in town all day. Well done for the excellent video.

Will regular train services ever resume between Swanage and Wareham? As someone who lived in Swanage for ten years or so, who has some first hand knowledge of the goings on of the railway, I would say no. Because such a thing would get in the way of those who just want to play trains! I would love to be proved wrong about that though! Excellent video by the way!

Looks like there has been some hard work going on here. I feeling is High-vis clothing is not a replacement for observation and common sense but should be seen as an aid to safety. Something that did make me smile is a notice on the side of the foot bridge at Sheffield telling passengers how to use the bridge safely. Announcements at Derby tell passengers not to run!
@tugboatcharly2112 жыл бұрын
the hard hats are a bit over the top but the high vis were an aid to the driver as an x driver i might point out that some persons on or near the line at the time a driver sees him or her was a good chance to warn and give time to get to a place of safety more so when the train is travelling 100mph plus. i speak from a near miss with a small girl on the line in steam days not funny!
