The water based pomade is a god send. I uses to use hair gel but my hair is so thick, so it really doesn't hold that well.

These first came out in the 80's, and they sold them at the town festival every year. My school eventually banned them because we'd all act like they were real switchblade knives and we'd have pretend fights with them on the playground. They didn't mess around either; they treated them like real knives and if you got caught with one it was a few days suspension.
