used an item on yourself when the other guy died but for whatever reason the game decided to skip your turn (pass) and make you use sword at the same time instead so you were attacking on the sentient statue's turn

You use item on other at a perfect time when you die make the game glitch and think you already use up you turn hence make it initiate sentient statue turn immediately, result in that wacky interaction.

Reminds me of the ninjis in paper mario the origami king. You'd go up to smack them with your hammer but they'd straight up teleport up and DROPKICK you as a counter so you were forced to use other means to damage them
