Curious what the numbers were for mortality as a result of motor vehicle collisions prior to the installation of the installation of the fence? Of course numerous species of wildlife would be included in those death tolls, and not just the deer you are focused on. For the record, I am a lifelong avid hunter, and spent five years working in the central interior of BC for the Forest Service.

Hi Andrew. The 1998 completion of the Highway 97 fence line in the study area noticeably reduced the number of mortalities along the highway. In 1997, prior to construction, there were 57 deer mortalities and in 1998, after construction, there were two mortalities on this stretch of highway. Since 1998, there have been an average of 3.2 ± 2.9 (standard deviation) deer mortalities in the study area annually. According to this data, 2006 was observed as having higher mortality with 12 deaths in the study area since the fence line was completed in 1997. Figure

The first year of fence monitoring, February 2023 to May 2023 - we recorded 47 new deer mortalities along the inside of the fence. In one 3 week period, there were 14 mortalities. We cannot dismiss human life and costs saved - we also cannot dismiss that a secondary issue has been created that in some years, rivals the highway mortalities. In both cases, the deer are still on the losing end.

I appreciate your reply, and you are obviously concerned about the deer; but you seem to still be ignoring why the ‘wildlife barrier fence’ was installed to begin with… human safety! Based on the volume and speed of traffic on that roadway, as was clearly heard in the background, I can imagine the number of vehicle/wildlife collisions were the fence not in place.

We understand why the fence has been installed and support the protection of human life. We are trying to mitigate the secondary mortalities that are occurring from predators using the fence to trap their prey. Here is more information on the project. huntersforbc.ca/eneas-project/ In British Columbia, mule deer populations have declined significantly. Our organization was formed because of broad ungulate declines across the province. It was observed that this busy stretch of highway at the bottom of a high-value mule deer winter range had a remarkable number of carcasses INSIDE the fenceline. We started to investigate this and collect data on mortality along with multiple cameras to record and observe the occurrence of deer dying (250+ mortalities to date).

The issue is the fence height, it’s not tall enough. The deer can jump this fence but this fence is at the height that if a deers back hoof enters below the top stand of wire as the deer jumps, the deer is locked on to the top of the fence like a trap. The deer are probably coming across the highway, jumping into that property, getting hung and hanging from the fence inside of that property area and are a free invitation for predators. I live in Texas and my state is covered in high fences and I have worked on many high fence properties, I have seen hundreds of dead deer , goats and sheep with bad fence heights.

The deer can't jump this fence. The deer are being eaten by predators using the fence to trap the deer. The mortalities are occuring on the inside of the fenceline in high value mule deer winter range. huntersforbc.ca/eneas-project

I’m not sure I understand the point of your video. Nor it seems so several others. You yourself answered the question as to why the fence is in place. Would you be happier if the fence was removed and the bones you are observing are those of your fellow citizens (and possibly family and friends) killed in automobile accidents as a result of collisions with wildlife? What is your point dude?

I think this guy doesn’t understand no one is trying to save deer. The fences have nothing to do with saving wildlife. It’s to detour them off the hwy/freeways trying there best to keep wildlife off the roads. This is to keep fatalities down on the roads. Yes maybe other animals see an easy meal from this but millions of human lives are saved because of this. We can change the speeds back to 55 or slower like they did in the past and take down the fences. 😂😂

not quite sure I understand. if the deer goes through the gate and away from the highway, how are they getting killed? are they essentially captured by the fence? if coyotes and other predators are getting in, why cant the deer get out? you must have some STUPID deer in BC. the US has fences near every interstate highway and we are STILL overrun with whitetails not to mention the hundreds of thousands killed ON the highway.

Remember when USA killed all those Antelope with the fence along WY highway 59, South of Gillette WY? It was almost unbelievable seeing those animals piled up for miles. I don't think an animals intelligence can be blamed, as those Antelope had never seen a fence before their death.

The fence has reduced 180 degrees of escapement at the bottom of a high value mule deer winter range. There mortalities are occurring on the INSIDE of the fenceline, on the winter range, not on the highway side. The fenceline is doing a good job protecting human life and motorists from deer - but has caused a secondary issue significant to this area. They put fence like this up around a solar field they built near my place in Michigan. Counted 11 dead deer one morning. Another time I saw a buck still living but it's bottom jaw was completely dislocated and hanging.. Obviously they get running at night and can't see that fence , killing more deer than you'd think.

@jimmyhenderson3028
@jimmyhenderson3028 14 күн бұрын
No they border the both sides of the highway and deer and other animals cross at their own risk. They have those wildlife gates but deer can jump and clear a 9 foot high fence easily at a full run ,I have seen them do that below Albany GA at a military base and it's very cool to see that with your own eyes and I am taking about whitetail deer and they make it look easy .

Unfortunately, this stretch of highway has NO overpass or underpass for the deer. Private property on both sides of the highway are significant. In addition, this stretch of fence is at the bottom of one of our best mule deer winter ranges in southern BC

The East Kootenays are usually sampling within a week of receiving heads. From there, it's usually less than 2 weeks for the lab to complete testing. So you should receive results in under 3 weeks. Greetings from the soggy south Okanagan, thanks for the video. As a semi-old guy who has boned out and either horse packed or back packed out a couple dozen mule deer bucks over the years, I'll send you a tip of the hat for your technique and knife skills. Would I have done it exactly that way? Perhaps not in all ways, but as an easy to learn from educational tool this is top notch stuff. I'll be mentioning it in our CORE class this spring for sure. All the best and good luck on all your remaining hunts.

seems clear after watching this and listening to all the commentators. the forestry companies don't give a shit about moose or wildlife. that's not why they exist. so they concern themselves strictly with timber harvest and creation. everyone hates regulations, but if this is the structure of business in BC, and forestry companies can dictate how wilderness looks, and the gov't can't intervene to create quality forests for all British Columbians, then we're screwed.
