Was it originally a typical box store splitter?

Yes, Huskee 22 ton. Standard horizontal/ verticle splitter. Usually around $1000 new from a big box store. I found this used for $400

@@hayesrutherford9415 do it! Definitely make sure you have a thick piece of steel for the table. Mine is 3/8 and started to bend because of the wider wedge. I had to add more support underneath

Absolutely fantastic! I built the exact same thing only I used an old 18.5 hp lawn mower engine. That gave me the electric start and ability to put on lights for splitting late afternoon in the winter. For a log lift, I made a hockey stick shaped lifting platform and ran a cable through a pulley up on the vertical tower. I attach this cable end to the blade slide and as the ram extends, it lifts the rounds up. No need for more hydraulic parts. Your back is gonna thank you, mine has. Thanks for posting, excellent job!

Thanks! I did think about finding an old lawn mower engine like you mentioned for the very same reason. I am happy with the 224 predator at $179 though

@@bobaganooshy Heck It's hard to find a used old splitter like that husky for that price these days, let alone a verrtical that all range in the 12K and up . Your back is already loving it and I'm sure it's a major time saver over a horizontal.

All you do is put a strap binder around the thing and and set the handle so all you have to do is tap it to to release it. This will bring the beads close and you don't have to work like an idiot. Don't ever use ether. Ever.

@@dave5543 for you Maybe. And I don't know whoever else agreed with you. But it's never not worked for me. Maybe you're not tough enough to pull the binder down hard enough. And you sometimes have to use a bead Blaster. But never ever either. And whoever agreed with you is an idiot. And not a professional. Either is never to be used ever. That was great. He just caught unexpected air had nothing to do with him not being able to handle the sled. Us weekend warriors sometimes don't know how to react to getting unexpected air. You're lucky it was soft and it wasn't hard pack. Those drifts hide in plain sight. Once you see it your too late.
