The Tone Zone and PAF Pro are great pups. I usually pair the Tone Zone with the Air Norton. As I mostly play strats the Tone Zone is the perfect pickup for me, and besides the Super Distortion and Super 3, the pickup I've used the most in my playing career. I got my firs Tone Zone in 1991 when they were brand new, a blue one, and popped it into my red Holdsworth Charvel just a week before playing a big gig at The Roxy on the Sunset Strip. It sounded incredible through my Boogie 50 Cal Combo. It's a very reliable pickup because it works well with most amps which I can't say for most pickups.
@joshoptical4 күн бұрын
@@angusorvid8840 yes tone zone is super flexible! It’s not easy to get it dialed in just right but it’s impossible to make it sound bad.
@angusorvid88404 күн бұрын
@@joshoptical The Tone Zone is the kind of pickup you learn to control by feel, rather than the kind you can just dial in in a very black and white way. I find this is more the case with alnico like the TZ than ceramics like the Evolution which tend to be more cut and dry. I have no preference as to alnico vs ceramic which I've always found to be a silly subject as there is much more to a pickup than the magnet that powers it, like the wire gauge, grade, tension, etc. I find the Tone Zone and Super Distortion have a lot in common as both lean towards chunky, low mids, high sustain, great harmonics, and are very warm. As for the Vai pickups in general, they tend to be ceramic, but the alnico models like the Gravity Storm are also great. I think the Gravity Storm is very well balanced. If you get a chance try the Norton and the Air Zone. They are hot PAF alnicos with a bit of DNA from the Tone Zone, Fred etc.

I had an HSS Contemporary Strat with that same locking nut. It was my first decent guitar I bought new in 1986. It also had a neat trem arm where you could adjust spring tension for the trem via a allen wrench head on the insert end of the trem bar. What an idiot I was selling that guitar. Personally, I think a roller nut would be an upgrade.
