Hi Florian. Just received my Q343! And during setup I used your process to transfer my settings from my 23. Worked for the most part. But a couple things. Profile numbers don't show correct on Photo/Video menu until you perform this fix due to a known software/firmware bug Hudson Henry discovered. It is to fix the FN2 button from defaulting to going to video mode even though you have it setup for other functions. He has a process to fix it. See his video linked here at 11:30 (or prior to get explanation). kzbin.info/www/bejne/iajGY5idq65sgNEsi=tQuSNE20IV9IfhCs

I have a Q3 28 that I got before the Q3 43 hit the market. However, 28 mm has always been my standard lens since I walked the streets of Lund, Sweden with my then Olympus OM4 Ti and a 28 mm lens. So, I feel very much at home with the Q3 28. As a bonus, the 28 mm allows you to use a UV filter and the original lens hood at the same time :-)

I've had my Q3 for just over 14 months now and have almost 4,000 Q3 images in my catalogue. Not once have I wished for anything longer - a few times I wished it was wider! If 28mm is too wide then you're not close enough!

Wish they made a 35mm. Also wld love to hear more about the lux vs apo characteristics and differences in these 2 cameras. Few talk about this. Curious why they put the APO on the 43mm and luxury on the 28mm and not the reverse (one might want a faster longer lens for portraiture?)

Great video. Have had the original Q, and was very satisfied, but now an M- shooter, because it’s more fun. Q cameras are fantastic but you feel more as a photographer in control when shooting a “real” Leica. Just my opinion - However, if you crop a 35 mm lens to 43 mm, what would be the factor to put on the pixel count in order to crop to the same width?

If Leica approached me and offered me a full refund on my Q3 28 mm and exchange for the 43 mm, I can honestly say I would still stay with the 28 mm.

So would I. This is not a battle of two great cameras. It is a discussion about focal length. It is far more challenging to shoot at 28mm than 43, and hence, I love it. It has opened my eyes to new projects, a new way of seeing things, that would not have happened if I was shooting at 'normal'. Ten years ago, my favourite lens was the Fuji 35mm (equiv 50mm), then I progressed to the 23mm (35). Now, since moving to the original Q3, neither of those more normal focal lengths have had any use by me at all

Great Video, I owned the Q3-28 for a couple of Months, On my 1st day of going out to shoot with the Camera, I found myself walking 3.5 miles and literally taking pictures of everything, On my 2nd day of shooting, I walked 5+ Miles doing the same thing, not realizing how far I actually walked (thank you Apple Watch). I love my Q3-28, but do feel that sometimes the range is a little wide, to make a long story short, I've talked myself into an excuse for purchasing the Q3-43 which is currently on back order from B&H Camera. I can only hope that the Q3-43 is as good as the Q3-28, I'm sure that you can't go wrong with either Camera

The 28 can do most of what the 43 does, except at the furthest telelens crop (75-135) but the 43 simply cannot do what the 28 does. Simple fact that would guide my choice if I could afford either. And, no, carrying both would defeat the whole purpose…😊

What do you mean by „the physics“ or the „characteristics“ of a 28mm? From a physical point of view the difference is just the megapixels you loose by cropping and more depth of field like a raise in aperture by a factor of 1.54 if you simulate the 43mm on the original Q3.

I have Q3 and love it, its great for European towns, villages etc with narrow streets, whereas the 43 is a bit more open spaces, I almost bought one but at the last minute pulled out as I have M10 & SL2s plus lenses and it’s too much to carry around. In a perfect world theQ4 would have a 28-45 zoom! Can I wake up now. Thanks for a great channel.

@flofroschmayer I have the Q3 and when the rumor mill predicted a Q3 with a 43mm I immediately got on the shortlist in my local Leica Store. And the plan was to sell the Q3. A Q3 with a 35 or 50 mm lens was always the Q I wished for. And what can I say, I really really love the 43 look, portrait or product shots look so good and are easier to achieve than with the 28 mil. But, now that I have my dream Q, I actually all of a sudden appreciate the Q3 28 mil so much more than before. I understand now why Leica went with the 28 mil initially. The 28 mil is super versatile, you can do wide shots, but you can also crop in. And I know, a crop in is not the same like having the actual focal length, but with the f1.7 and 60MP you can fake a 35 to max 50 mil shot relatively credible. So if I go on a trip, travel, where I don’t know what to expect, I will always take the original Q3, because it’s more versatile. On the other hand if I know in advance what to expect, like going to an event, family gatherings, do more object oriented photography, I would always take the 43 now that I have it, because it is better suited for such intentional photography. So in a nutshell, I’ll keep them both.

I finally managed to get a Leica and a few months later they launch the Q3 43… My first thought was to sell some gear, go crazy and buy the Q3 43 also… But I have the Nikon Zf with the 40mm f2 and some other lenses. Then I saw a comparison between the Nikon Zf with the Q3 43 and the similarities in the outcome of both stopped my, insane, initial thoughts 😊 But the Q3 43 is still resounding in my head… Why did they do that? 😊 Why now and not a few months back? 😊 But we are right, the 28mm is far more challenging and in the end I believe it will help me better in taking photos… Keep sharing 😊

Great comparison video. I recently purchased my Q3 28mm last month, and love everything about the camera. I also have a Canon 5D mark IV, along with a full kit of Canon L-glass, that I’ve been shooting with since 2019. Most of my everyday, travel, portrait, and event shooting, is with my Canon 5D mark IV and my Canon L 24mm -70mm f2.8 or my Canon L 24mm - 105mm f3.5. So, for me, the Leica Q3 28mm (including the crop capability to 90mm) fits well into 90% of my photography interests. Adding the Q3’s 60mp full frame sensor, really seals my preference for the Leica Q3 28mm system. Now I’m seriously considering selling my entire Canon Kit, and focusing on all of my photography to be done with the Leica Q3 28mm system.

Thanks for your video. I am a 28, 35, and 50mm Shooter. When the Q3 43 was released, I remembered my love for the Q2, gave in to my degrading eye sight, sold my M11 and lenses, and bought a Q3 and Q3 43. The two cameras cover my most used focal lengths and I can again, enjoy focus peaking plus a great EVF (when in manual) and the autofocus. Regarding cropping I completely agree, that it won‘t do. The problem is, and many youtubers do not seem to understand is, that focal length are about field of view, but even more so about depth. Depth with a 28 is noticeably deeper than with a 43, which on the other hand has a much higher compression. Going back and forth changes nothing about this very important fact and consequences for the look of the resulting pictures.

Happiness in Your Own Backyard! One question - So many reviewers of both the 28 and the 43 devote lots of discussion to the in-camera crop modes, yet these are photographers who do not use JPEGs. The feature seems irrelevant for those who focus on DNG files, no?

Great pics for comparing, I'm in similar boat right now trying to decide if I should keep my Q3 28 (which I just purchased a couple weeks ago) or wait for the 43. I was coming to a similar conclusion as you and was also considering that I would use my other camera(s) to shoot with other focal lengths for sure. But I have also considered (as I'm able to afford it) keeping both and actually using the two for my travel bag alone. Otherwise I would take my Q3 28 with my Zf and a 50 f1 and 24-120 f4 as my full travel kit. Will you be getting the 43 and keeping both? Sounds like you might.

Thanks for this. Only recently did I decide I wanted to add to my Sony RX1 (35mm)... have placed an order for the 43, but it is on back order for 2 months, so every day I debate whether to get the 28 instead (or even the M11), or stay with my 43 order. After watching this, I'm now even more torn what to do... probably the smart thing to do is just keep using the RX1... but I have an itch to buy another camera after 12 years. When I first got the RX1 the 35mm focal length felt very wide to me, but after all these years I am pretty comfortable with it. Option B, get the 43 now and hope the Q4 is a 28mm APO Summicron, then get that.

Thanks Florian, a very nice video as a Q3 owner, I found this interesting. I believe what you did was to find a composition and first take it with the Q3 43 and then took an image from the same spot with the Q3. I think the flaw in this is that you composed for the 43 first which would naturally gives a bias for the 43. Just a thought! 😁 Well done with the channel! Using the Q3 has made me consider an M11, unfortunately nowhere in Ireland to get to try one out. Very curious to try and understand focusing with a range finder 🤨

Using a (real) rangefinder will require to relearn photography (to some degree). It is completely different and rewarding (to some). Currently, after selling my M11-P and switching to 2 Q3, I have to relearn or at least get to know again, how to use an EVF and to rely on autofocus. Very often I switch to manual, especially for street photography.
