I forgot to mention during Entumbane 2 Major Tony Husher and his Support Company moved to a number of key routes and locations to provide fire support including moving with the armoured car boys to block the road from Essexvale. All this happened within hours of the fighting having started.

Entumbane 2 was in Feb 1981 and 1 RAR Battle Group had C Coy on the Beer Hall Hill in Entumbane when it kicked off, so I cant see how RAR were 3 days late as we were already on the ground. The reaction company moved immediately with the rest of the battalion following soon after. B and D Coys heading for Entumbane while A Coy blocked the eastern edge of Bulawayo off with the armoured car boys. This is where the BTR 152s were knocked out. Read the book Inyantue to Entumbane the RAR Association still has copies I believe. The BSAP Support Company, RR and other elements were also defending key routes and locations but we could never get anyone to come forward with more info to include in the publication.

I must apologise for the focus quality of the footage but I was using my fathers old cine 8 wind up camera which came out to Africa with us in 1954. The lens had cracked and fallen out but I just felt I had to document this historic moment in 1 RAR history. Great memories as many of our characters are in there including my Pl WO and my Batman Nyoni. All great men. This was taken not long after ZIPRA at Gwaai River Mine AP decided to surrender their position there as they new what was coming.

I keep seeing some dullards in these in these comments who never opened a history book in their lives, whining about America’s participation in World War II through their own ignorance, Few people realize that in 1938 as Americans saw Europeans blunder into the same stupidity that caused World War I our military was ranked number 19 in the world because we were not interested in fighting a war guess who is number 18 in the world Portugal that’s right Portugal had a larger military than America in 1939 so we got to work with industrialization building planes, tanks, machine guns artillery pieces and we had what we called the lend lease, which allowed us to arm the British very effectively 99% of the British at the time understood what we were doing and welcomed all the free military equipment because the understanding was they would never have to pay it back America did this as they were starting to build up actual bodies in the military in preparation for the war

There was no free US American equipment. It was initially "Cash and Carry" and later "Lease/Lend" and the wartime British debt to the USA for the latter was only paid off in 2006. The worrying thing today is that much of the Republican Party seems to have returned to the isolationism of the 1930s. It would apparently do a "Munich" with Putin - and we know where the last Munich led!

It is interesting to note that in WWII British colonial forces had defeated the Italians in East Africa, driven Rommel into Tunisia, won the battle of Britain, the battle of Malta and the battle of the Atlantic as well as advances in Burma against the Japanese. This was all before American forces entered the war. Few people realize this.

Police Support Unit did corral the 2000 Zipra and 2000 Zanla who were fighting largely amongst themselves for the first 3 days of this trouble, prior to the arrival of the Army. The govt was reluctant to use integrated units in case they too split. Hence the use of RAR. Support Unit Delta Troop (which by the way was a company) also drove them out of the railway diesel workshops which Zipra had taken to facilitate the tanks they were bringing in from Gwaai river mine. It was by the way definitely 1981 during Entumbane 2. Many in Support Unit were peeved that they got no recognition. For some reason or other the govt did not want it known that police were heavily involved maybe because they were needed for similar duties, but many of those involved were later given double promotions.

When I was compiling "From Inyantue to Entumbane" I did ask several SU people to give their side of what happened in 1981. Answer came there none. I was promised I could borrow, or even buy, a copy of the SU history which had just been published at the time, but that promise was never carried through. We did try. We have a couple of photos of SU people and vehicles at various locations (the City Hall car park and on the road near the 1:3 Bn camp on the Falls Road, where 1RAR and the Eland armoured cars put down a mutiny), but I didn't include them in the book as I had very little to put them into context. All I could do was mark the SU positions on the map of the battle.

@@RARAssociation OK, fair enough. Now let me fill you in. For the first 3 days Delta Troop surrounded Entumbane. In effect they were a re-enforced Company and they held both Zipra and Zanla within Entumbane as the fear was that they would break out and that fighting would spread to the whole city. Nkomo complained at the time that they were a bit too severe as they took out some of his men. Delta was under the command of Lance Insp Crean for the first 2 days and then the Troop commander Insp Eli BARR returned and took over. When they heard that Zipra had taken the railways diesel workshops they launched an attack on the workshops and Zipra ran. However just as they got near to driving them out they encountered heavy resistance. S/O Bruce Bently launched a full scale all out assault on the Zipra positions only to stop half way through after he found that it was an RAR position he was attacking which was under the command of an American officer. They had come in from the opposite side to drive Zipra out. Support Unit unfortunately was not informed that the Army had moved in nor was the Army informed about the presence of Support Unit. Support Unit then withdrew to their base in the Matopos. In the wake of all of this there was much dissatisfaction in Support Unit over the failure to recognize what they had done. The officer commanding Support Unit at the time stated that the reason for this was that the Police had to appear to be seen to be neutral and if it got known that it was fighting the Comrades non stop for 3 days and nights it might compromise future operations. Most thought that this was a weak excuse however many of those in command during that shindig did receive promotions instead of medals and that quietened matters down. So there you are.

I remember Ian Smith saying in 1972 "No Majority Rule for a thousand years", and Ian Smith and the thug John Vorster standing side by side at Victoria Falls, pointing to Zambia and boasting "Black Africa stops here". The white man foolishly believed them. By 1980, White rule in Rhodesia was overturned and in 1994, white rule in South Africa overturned. Britain had nothing to do with it. It was the black man with help from East Germany, China, Cuba and Russia who the white man had to contend with.
