I think there is a fatal point in this sermon. The pastor really emphasizing on our work to practice on thinking what is true, excellent, pure, admirable, etc. But what is lacking here is the context. This verse he quoted is the Paul’s solution to the problem betweenthe women in v. 2-3. Because these women were quarreling upon something small and unnecessary compared to the blessing God had provided in the work of the cross that is found in chapter 2-3. And we also need to notice that chapter 4 begins with the word “therefore”, which means it is the continuation of chapter 3. And in chapter 3, Paul gives us examples of how he only fix his thought on what is admirable, pure, true, etc. ”But whatever things were gain to me, these things I have counted as loss because of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them mere rubbish, so that I may gain Christ, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.“ ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭3‬:‭7‬-‭8‬, ‭10‬, ‭14‬ ‭ This is what is true, admirable, excellent, pure: The Gospel of Christ Jesus. The reason we fail after trying so hard is because we depend on ourselves. So instead And when we start emphasizing on work, we lose the Gospel. What changes and transform us is not our work, how discipline we are, but the Gospel. So instead of depending on our mind to discern what is excellent, admirable, honorable, we focus and fix our eyes on the work that Jesus has done for us.
