In the 80s Mexi Strats were around $500, and they were usually in great shape. Now? $800 to 1k along with fret sprout, poorly cut nuts (mine) and cheap hardware. At $300 more, you would expect they could do quality at least as well as the 80s. Sadly, no. It's about profit and cutting corners. I guess they assume these are their new "student" models? Because, they are certainly assembling them as if they are.

Found a B-Stock for $700, swapped out the pickup with a Seymour Duncan JJN Silencer P90, swapped out the bridge with a Wilkinson all black bridge, and added a TUSQ XL black nut. It plays so well and is one of my favorites. The frets were immaculate which surprised me. I got lucky.

If, like me, you’ve been searching to hear a Mulecaster played acoustically (not amplified), you have arrived at the the right review. Coming from the acoustic guitar side of things this was important to me. A lot of electric guitar guys don’t pay much attention to this attribute but there is a wealth of tones at the lower volume end of the scale that I find interesting and even though there are some great, portable, battery powered amps these days sometimes you just want to go as bare bones as possible. This a great review and was very helpful to me. I’m probably going to buy one.
@BluesWillisMusic26 күн бұрын
I am glad the video was what you were looking for and you bring up a good point. Many people ignore the acoustic sounds. In general the first time I play an electric guitar in a store, the sales person always comes up to ask me if I want to plug in, and I say no. Let me hear the guitar first. If I like it, then of course I wanna hear it with an amp too. I recommend ordering a mule from Matt rather than buying used.

I am a sixty seven year old guitar player , and have been playing since I was thirteen . I fell in love with Johnny Winters steel playing when I was about seventeen and could not afford a National Steel so I bought a ton of copy's over the years you know the ones Regals Recording Kings , I even had a Dobro style O .I bought my first National ten years ago and I can testify it is well worth the extra cash .............playability, sound, reliability . Just my humble opinion
@BluesWillisMusicАй бұрын
I fully agree. National is the gold standard. There are great value cheaper guitars for people who only dabble but if you are serious and play it enough to justify the spending national is a must. Mule is also a goof choice for people who like to stand out a little.

I sent this one back and bought another one used - which was a mistake because it kinda seems Matt detests people who buy his guitars used and provides no support to them whatsoever :D Anyway I ended up with a punk strat which I like very much and has a way flatter neck/smaller relief.

@@BluesWillisMusic reading reviews around makes me thing these guitars are unique in terms of sound but can lack of build quality for some little annoying things (often related to fretwork). I got one of these, after watching your review. I don't mind a rolled fretboard edge, but the noventa's neck feels pretty nice to me. The body is fine too. I wouldn't want it any more rounded. I don't mind the pots, but I know that the wiring ain't great, so I'll probably get CTS pots and an orange drop. Honestly, my biggest problem is with the bridge saddles. They're slanted, so the low string kinda slides back and forth. I need compensated saddles with some kind of groove cut into them. Oh well, this seems like a Tele problem generally.

You can't really go wrong with a any national. The Reso Rocket compared to other single cone biscuit resonators sound fuller, deeper more of a singer songwriter guitar. It doesn't have that tin trash can sound some people are looking for in a resonator, however you can get close using fingerpicks and picking closer to the bridge.

I’m about to install one of these, thank you for your video. It was very helpful. I am hoping it will be straight forward. Slightly worried that the set screw that controls the pitch limit will move over time.
@BluesWillisMusic7 ай бұрын
Yeah the screws will move a little over time, I have experienced that with other benders as well. SO every now and then you will need to adjust it but that's just the nature of physics and guitars in my opinion. You set the screw based on the tension in the string. That can change too with different string brand or gauge or if the neck moves.
@DTGuitarTech7 ай бұрын
@@BluesWillisMusic Thanks for your reply. My installation went well. I have added an extra felt washer to try and stop the set screw moving once set. The only other problem I had was that the instructions recommend that the posts are all the way down but I could not leave it this way because the nut and screw from the lever hit the string and wore the string to the point where it snapped! (Installing on a Gibson Firebird). So I raised the b bender and it is now fine. Also, in terms of fit, I found that the b bender was a much looser fit than the Gibson tailpiece. And I thought stability was important. So I ended up making 2 spacers 0.96mm thick to ensure that the unit was stable. Got there in the end!
@BluesWillisMusic7 ай бұрын
@@DTGuitarTech Maybe the strings would have kept it in place safe enough but better be sure, so I think you did the right thing and go the extra mile. Let me know hoe you like the bender in a couple of weeks/months.
@DTGuitarTech7 ай бұрын
@@BluesWillisMusic Yeah I did think the tension of the strings would be enough. But my logic was that, turning a static tailpiece into something that has a moving part would need more stability. It’s done anyway! Enjoying it so far. Big learning curve.
