I've got several of these, in both 20 gallon and 60 gallon size, some made in USA, and newer ones from China. The newer, China made 60 gallon models did make a mechanical sound that the older USA model did not. Close examination showed that the impeller on the ones made in China had a small piece of white plastic (next to the magnet) that wasn't trimmed very well, and which rubbed on the inner wall of the recess where the impeller spins. I trimmed this plastic with a knife out of the kitchen drawer, and the filter immediately became as quiet as the older USA made model, which is to say, almost completely inaudible, and deserving of the Whisper name. Both of my 20 gallon models, one USA made and the other made in China, are perfectly silent, and appear to be made exactly to the same high quality standard. Except for the minor issue with the impeller, the same applies to my 60 gallon models, there simply is no difference in the quality of construction or materials. As mentioned in the video, I also have had the rubber O-ring start to leak on a couple of these when it gets old. The fix is easy, just remove the filter from the aquarium, then remove the motor housing from the bottom of the filter. Wrap a few turns of teflon tape over the O-ring, and reinstall the motor housing. These do need to be filled with water before plugging them in, but mine have been very good about starting reliably if this is done, and restarting after power outages (they don't lose their prime like some filters). The filter pads are very economical to buy, about 60 cents each if you buy them in a 12 pack from Amazon, and you can rinse them and reuse them several times before you have to replace them. The last feature I will mention is the flow control located at the top of the suction tube. This works really well and is easy to operate. It's much better than the flow control on any other hang-on-back filter that I've used, and lets you easily turn the flow down to a trickle for feeding. Taken on a cost/benefit basis, the Whisper is very impressive.

I've had this filter for about 7 years on a 36 Gallon planted low tech tank. I have some phosphate issues but my water is clear - just getting some brown algae and bba on a few plants. In your video you mention having an additional sponge filter and aqua clear filter running purigen. So you have 3 filters on the 40 gallon tank? I purchased phosphate media pad that I am planning to add to my canister. Any other suggestions? Would running additional filters help?
@nextdooraquatics5013
@nextdooraquatics5013 3 ай бұрын
Hey. The 40 has the Eheim canister and a hob for chemical media and a sponge filter. Running additional filters isn’t likely to help with the algae. I would recommend cutting down the lights (use a timer if you don’t already have one) to no more than 6 hours a day, less if needed, and doing more water changes. In my experience, young Siamese algae eaters will munch of bba.

basically don't follow anything from this video... any kind of overflow box with U pipes over the tank can lose siphon and cause a flood...it's cheaper to do it right rather than spending thousands on fixing wooden floors etc... also as you see in this video the sump intake has bubbles and he made a little cover for the top.. it's not for aesthetics. it's because the damn thing is so loud that he thought he could reduce the noise with it. also...always make sure to use glass baffles for the return partition where the water will pump up... with the system running fill up that partition in the sump until the top tank is full...and that's your total capacity reason for that is because if for some reason something in the overflow gets plugged the sump will never overflow the top tank... its better for the pump to run dry and break than spending thousands to fix water damage as you can see in this video..if he loses power..his overflow will empty until there's no siphon on the main tank side when the power goes back on, since he has no return partition...ALL the water in the bottom tank will pump up to the top and flood the top tank also any type of overflow box like this with a U pipe will lose siphon even when running after sometime micro bubbles get introduced in the pipes creating at the top of the pipe..once the air in the U pipe reaches the "legs"...no more siphon these types of boxes are known as time-bombs overflow boxes such as these can be "fixed" by running an air-line pushing the air into the box with a T connected to the top of the U pipe basically acting as a vacuum (this requires the air pump to be strong enough to pull the water high enough for it to flow again) these are the common..how not to build your sump videos created by someone that is just happy that they got a sump going xD there's many ways of doing sumps properly and you can search on youtube for it.. there's intake pipes using a cap a bit smaller than the id of the intake pipe with "teeth" cut in it...the cap will have an air bubble and spin and the water flow into the overflow box you can have a builtin sump in the tank..drill the side of the tank and overflow to another tank I don't trust overflow boxes on the outside of the tank simply because of water weight overtime... also for freshwater systems..issues with sumps is small fish such as fry or shrimp getting into filtration just take this into account...1 sock filter can handle about 400gph as a limit...200gph to be on the safe side...determine the pump that you'll be using..and then build accordingly as most regular tanks are 12" deep a safe way to have a sump would be to get a 18" deep and using the back wall to build the sump and using 3 intake socks on each side with the pump in the middle partition drill the back of the tank in the top of the middle partition and thats your overflow into the bottom... if the power ever goes out only a few inches of water from the middle partition will flow back to the bottom... now..return pipes from the sump..they should always go in the water so that there's no noise of water splashing returning to the top tank then to prevent back flow in case of a power outage there's 2 things you can do...on the return pipes from the pump..put a check valve on the return pipes right on top of the water level drill a hole in the pvc pipe angled towards the flow the check valve will prevent backflow...and just in case the spring or valve got stuck in the open position the hole in the pvc at the top will break the backflow siphon the only trick I've seen for this was on a youtube video some guy had a clear pvc pipe with a gasket at the bottom and a bearing inside the pipe so when the water pushes up it flows.... if it stops the bearing falls and blocks the gasket..I've never tried it myself but looked neat here's a tank I've done with a double intake photos.app.goo.gl/j84yKPzveQuRTws1A you can literally build the same way with the 2 intakes..drill the back for overflow and have another tank in the bottom the same way... double filtration...no flooding risks ^^ if you're new to glass cutting my tips and tricks are as follow..get a nice long thick ruler with an anti-slip bottom so the ruler doesnt move while you're cutting and get a glass cutter with an angled flat surface at the bottom with oil (these tend to run away less than the old ones and provide a cleaner cut) you can find them on amazon... also search on youtube for "bean animal" that's the most accepted way of running a proper overflow box into a sump as it's safe and also silent
@nextdooraquatics5013
@nextdooraquatics5013 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed response. Regarding your points, Yes, a U-tube overflow can lose siphon. Using this particular overflow, I never have, nor do I need to constantly remove bubbles. There was not a bubble in the tube at the time of the video and this sump has been running nearly 2 years, maybe more without issue. Drilling the tank is always preferable, if you have the desire. The lid is to reduce noise, yes. Overflows, in general, tend to be noisy. If you want a silent tank, a sump is not going to be the first choice. In that case, a canister filter is probably the best filtration. Using a glass partition for the return pump is a good idea and I admit that this is a good point. As of yet, this has not been an issue for me and the tank is in an area where flooding would not cause a significant issue. If the tank is located on a main floor, adding this partition would be a good idea to prevent the pump from overflowing the main tank should the overflow stop working properly. “as you can see in this video..if he loses power..his overflow will empty until there's no siphon on the main tank side” This is inaccurate. This overflow is designed such that each side of the U-tube remains submerged if the power is lost. As a result, once the power comes back on the siphon is maintained and the overflow works as intended. Please do your research when selecting an overflow of this style. Not all of them are designed this way.
