Just discovered Furtwangler conducting Beethoven's 9th. I always loved (still do) Von Karajan. However!! The transition from the third to fourth movement is The Most wonderful and intense!! Perfect!!!

It is my considered opinion that when Christoph Willibald Gluck was inspired to write the minuet, "Dance of the Blessed Spirits" (from his opera 'Orfeo ed Eurydice") he had an uncredited co-writer - The Holy Spirit. No mere mortal could write a piece of music like this which delights the human ear, moves the human spirit and at the same time touches the human Soul in a profound and transcendental way.

SI EL GRAN BEETHOVEN FUERA A DIRIGIR ESTA SINFONÍA LO QUE SE ESCUCHARÍA SERÍA EXACTAMENTE ESTA MAGNA VERSIÓN DEL MÁS MAGNÍFICO DE LOS DIRECTORES DE ORQUESTA , WILHELM FURTWANGLER

First movement: even if you're Furtwängler, God or Donald Trump, Beethoven wrote "allegro con brio", not "andante assonnato but hang on let's wake up again and really bang it out slowly to remind them it's dead significant ". I find F's 1st movement turgid, heavy-handed and bombastic none of which are attributes of anything Beethoven wrote. The other 3 movements, got to hand it to him - really good to brilliant.

Everything in this performance is close to perfection---tempo, expression, sound volume crescendo and decrescendo. After enduring war, chaos and starvation, these people came back to play like this.

Everyone's talking about how unique his interpretation is, and YES it is, and it's GOOD (understatement). I just wish we could have heard Beethoven himself conducting his symphonies. Oh what a priceless and precious experience that would have been. RIP Ludwig my hero.

Electrifying! I am 77 but this was like hearing Beethoven's 5th for the first time. Fresh, clear, powerful and totally alive. Never heard W. Furtwangler before. This goes beyond the bravado of Bernstein and precession of Von Karajan. I feel like I've just met the soul of Ludwig for the first time. Bravo master Furtwangler! Bravo... where ever you are.
