This is brilliant. Are the lights powered by solar or a generator? This idea could definitely be used in local councils for their displays. Getting the power to the lights would be the biggest hurdle but they do it in town centres for their trees so I guess there's a way. That winch that moves the strings of lights up reminds me of the retractable Hills Hoists washing lines. The Hills' is an old type of rotary washing lines that were pretty much in 85% of backyards in Australia in the middle of last century and onwards. As backyards became smaller in the 1980s (mostly due to people using up the space for entertaining or pools) Hills developed washing lines that could be lifted out of their hole in the ground and taken away when not in use. The top part would fold down (a bit like an umbrella) and the winder would tighten the line to hold up the freshly laundered clothes. Even on the old, much larger, steel Hills, the hoist in the centre didn't retract the line but it did move the hanging part up and down so it was easier to reach and then it was lifted to give it more space off the ground to catch the wind and sun. There's a different kind of washing line used these days but as kids, we loved to hang from the line and swing around and around until we got yelled at by mum or dad. It was like having a playground in your backyard. There's a video about the Hills Hoist here. Look up 'History of the Hills Rotary Hoist' if you're interested. You should gather from the amount I've written, I don't go to parties. In fact, I barely ever go out. I tried going out my back door to do some gardening this week but it was either too hot (over 40C) or bloody raining again. I can't win! @@bigmikeobama5314

That's cute. Mine's 52' tall, with a 6' angel on top & 7200 lights. I post this as a warning as my first one 16 years ago was 24' tall. Once you get the bug, it can be hard to shake!

The fellow that made them has gone out of business. My brother is a welder, so we plan to get together after the first of the year and make a few of these ourselves.

How stupid! Just use electric conduit instead of iron pipe, it is much easier to work with and much cheaper.

Great video and tips. Looking forward to more. Curious, are those 12" pins also sold at the local home improvement store in the black pipe section? I don't recall seeing them.

We make them, I say in the video the pipe id is 1-1/4”, but it’s actually 1-3/8”. We purchase 1-3/8” round stock from our local metal supplier, I cut a 1” section of black pipe, drill a 1/2” hole place on the 12” round stock and use a stick welder to fill in the hole that was drilled. Hope this helps.

The pins that connect the pipes together is 1-3/8” dia x 12”.

Would the hair ties work with mini light? How do you determine the size of the base ring?

Yes, the hair ties will work with the mini lights. The base is personal preference. I use the following: 10’ tree = 2 sticks of conduit, 15’ tree = 3 and 20’ tree = 5 sticks.

Hi, where did you get a 25’ strand with 70 bulbs? I am going to do this in the front of my house. Great job on the explanation and the result!

Thanks for the compliment. I get the majority of my lights from Holiday Lights Express. If you buy on their preseason buy and pre pay, you save about 20%. If you buy $1k or more, it’s freight prepaid.
