Now this is a blast from the past! In recent years, watching these old halftime shows from the 1960's, 70's and 80's around Super Bowl time has been one of my guilty pleasures. To see this show in its entirety, start here and then go to youtube.com:/watch?v=vEcId2tXuh4 for part 2.

Sure glad to have some of these old shows on KZbin. IMHO, the Super Bowl halftime show jumped a HUGE shark in the early 1990's. A minority opinion, I'm sure, but I like these old-school halftime shows from the early years of the Super Bowl much better.

I was a member of the MMB. History shows that those people down south got the idea for the script (that state) from a MMB pregame back in the 40's. There are pics of it out there. ::searches:: GOOOOOOO BLUUUUUUE!

@@ikarooz The MMB version was simply a block Ohio, formed from a scatter formation. No flow, no cursive, no motion. Apart from the word “Ohio”, the two have almost no relation to each other.

@efrem1 No, LBJ died on January 22, 1973, 8 days AFTER this game which was January 14, 1973. Also on January 22, 1973 Roe v Wade was passed and American involvement in Vietnam ended.

@jjs022478 It's been a long time, but it was actually LBJ who died in early 1973 a few days just before this game.

This is the '72 game in Columbus. As Chris Schenkel notes, OSU led that game 7-3 at the half. At the 4:40 mark the camera shows the entire "Love" formation by TBDBITL and you can clearly see the smaller "south stands" that Ohio Stadium had back then

George Cavender conducted the Michigan Band at the Super Bowl. William Revelli had retired as band director a couple years earlier.

Nice to see the Michigan band in southern California during the 70's. They did not get there very often after all of their losses to Ohio State. Then again, nothing much has changed.

This was one of the greatest halftime shows of all time. I've searched for years for the Song, "Marmalade, Molasses and Honey" by Andy Williams because I rememberred it from this half time show. I finally found it still in print by a music company in Germany. Was the most expensive 45 rpm I've ever bought, but worth it.

Oh,my! I was in the flag corps, waaaay back then. We marched with the Big Ten flags. I carried the very heavy, triple layered, white Wisconsin flag. The lighter Maize and Blue flags came out in 1976. I recall how we blew out the field mics when we open halftime with the 20th Century FOX theme. My goodness, how time flies. GO BLUE

The '73 Super Bowl band was not the full Michigan Band, but a scaled-down block of about 120 musicians.

At the time, I don't think there was a band in the country that could play and march as well as Michigan. Listen to how tight they are; even with the old-school microphones and sound system they still sound great.
