Don't tell me you are going to use an overdrive pedal? Do a separate demo for your Zen Drive so we can hear this guitar and pickups. Still talking several minutes in... Finally hearing the guitar... These pickups are pretty bright, don't seem to have the range and sweetness of the Filtertrons. Zen Drive demo. All guitars would sound like this! The low end with the drive is very woofy and fizzy, still it could work in a track or in a live mix. It was a better demo than I thought it was going to be! Thanks!

Sorry it wasn’t for you- I use OD and clean tones to show how the guitar sounds for different applications. I know that I always value hearing a guitar clean and dirty to see how the pickups react.

Those pickups appear to not be the original HiloTrons (which were I believe a true single coil) but the later Super Hilotrons (2013/14?) which have the Gretsch "G" and arrow on them, which are a Filtertron with only 6 poles showing (the others are 6 metal slugs under the cover). The originals were wound to something like 3-3.5k, and the Supers are 4.5K alnico which have a bit 'more' going on.

Early 2000s historics are my fav - Gibson still had Honduran mahogany and Madagascar rosewood. No hide glue/celluloid inlays/ABS binding like the post 2013 but better woods. Looks like a really nice dark Madagascar board on that one.

Hey partner, I saw this in my recommendations and I had AUTOMATICALLY saved this to my watch list! That is one absolutely lovely Lester that you have! It fits your look too. In my strongest opinion, you should never part from it. It's custom shop sure, but it has great character in YOUR hands. Fantastic guitar, longer story short!

I put '59s on a 2000 MIM Fender Strat along with all new CTS electronics (which actually came stock on the MIM), put in a new big block American Fender bridge, wired in a treble bleed and rewired it so I have 7 positions with the puckups. It is my favorite go to guitar. Such sweet tones come out of her. Her name is "Alma", after the woman whose name was on the neck boot. Such a nice instrument now.
@theguitarlog Жыл бұрын
It’s hard to say without seeing it. But, it is amazing what a good luthier can do. Depending on where you’re located. There are some great repair shops and I’d take it to them and get it assessed. This one sounded great with the work it had. Most guitars have plenty of life after a solid repair.

@theguitarlog Жыл бұрын
Sorry for a slow response. It all depends on the location and how bad the cracks are. I've seen luthiers do some amazing repairs. But make sure you find a good one. I've also seen some very bad repairs that have ruined guitars.

Laminate construction is no detriment. What a strange thing to say. It's a different construction that has its own tonal voice and its own benefits. I for one prefer laminate archtops for most applications.
@theguitarlog Жыл бұрын
I agree that laminates are very helpful in reducing feedback. But it doesn’t get the love that solid wood does. I don’t mind it at all for an electric but don’t like laminate acoustic tops. Had a J160 that just needed more life and I’d attribute some of that to the laminate top. Still a cool guitar though.
@vecernicek2 Жыл бұрын
@@theguitarlog Gets my love :) Yeah, flattops are different animal you definitely want to go solid woods there. Laminate archtops, especially Gibson style 16-inch tend to have a particular percussive quality to the tone, which carved archtops don't have. I happen to like it. Carved archtop, especially 17s and 18s tend to sound more woody, which is great If thats what you like. I still prefer laminate, if I could only have one. 16 inch carved make little sense to me.

I got one in Ocean Blue. The neck is very thick and the nut wide, so it isn't going to be to everyone's taste. I replaced the zero brass nut with a GraphTech one and i replaced the G-Force system with Hipshot Open Gear locking tuners. The 100 year logo doesn't bother me and the hologram is tucked away on the back, it doesn't bother me. The genuine mother of pearl inlays are beautiiful. The maple top is stunning. The Ocean Blue finish isn't traditional at all but looks very nice nonetheless. The standout features are the pickups and the sustain. It sounds amazing, notes ring out better than on any other guitar I've ever played. If you want an amazing sounding humbucker equipped single body guitar with unbeatable tone and sustain these are right up there.
