Some of the nuts and bolts are tight because they are torqued to spec like the steering stem head nut and the fork cap on each fork are 65 lb-ft.. I see that you guys have good roads. How is the ground clearance of this bike? Could you go with it on more bumpy roads? What about cruising with a passenger - how does the bike feel? does it have enough power? what about the passenger's comfort? Thanks in advance!
@squish3r Жыл бұрын
My opinion is based on 2 people about my size (240ish lbs). Power: fine. It's about 70 hp, so it handles 2up with just a little more clutch work. Brakes: adequate. You have to use noticeably more lever but I suspect that's normal. Handling/clearance: it's a cruiser. Not much else to say. The suspension handles subpar roads ok enough too without rattling your fillings. Comfort: cramped. I'm pushed up against the tank a bit, but wouldn't be as much issue with smaller people. There is a passenger backrest/sissy bar which is nice but the pillion cushion is on the small side for the stock seat. TLDR: it'll do 2up but if you're sized like me you'll not want to cross the country like that.

I'm so happy you posted, im considering buying a 1998 vs1400 as a first bike.
@squish3r2 жыл бұрын
The 1400 is a little bit big for a first bike. It's torquey, a little heavy and about 20 hp more than I typically recommend. It's otherwise pretty easy to ride. It's not insane like a supersport though, so you could do worse. The 800 Intruder slots in under the 50 hp mark, a little lighter and is actually a bit more common. I would generally consider that to be a better first bike if you're set on an Intruder.

Is this windshield good? No head wobble? Where does wind hit?
@squish3r3 жыл бұрын
It's height is a little bit adjustable. I have the top edge just above my eyes, so the wind mostly runs across the top of my helmet. I don't really get much buffeting until I reach about 80 miles per hour (~130 kmh). For my purposes it's fantastic. Slipstreamer does make a short version called the "Phantom (SS-34)" as well as quite a few others if you prefer a lower profile.

Closest I've done like that is my intro vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sH65coaMeJ2WgcU There's some nice weather this week, so I'll try to get out and put something together. I bought mine in 2018 for ~$2,000 with 15,xxx miles on it, and otherwise as close to showroom as a 15 year old bike could be. I managed to talk them down just a smidge, but I would expect anywhere between 1800 and 3500 for a really nice one, depending on the year (especially anything '00 and up), your location and mileage.

I like mine. If the price is right I'd say go for it. It's a good balance between comfort and performance and price. My only real complaint is the fuel economy - I average about 35 mpg, so about 100 miles before hitting reserve fuel. Heads up too if it matters: These are carbureted bikes. I haven't had any problems, but carbs DO NOT like to sit, especially w/ E10 gas. If you have to winterize, definitely use a fuel stabilizer, and even then you may have to drain the carbs in the spring to get rid of the stale fuel.

I can usually get 100 miles before switching to reserve. Fuel capacity is also my only real complaint with this model. If you're filling up at 60 you're being very conservative. Or it's out of tune, I typically get about 35mpg.

Will have to try the chest or helmet mount next time to see if it cuts down the gear noise. I'm thinking that the bar mount is transmitting it through the camera housing because it's not noticeable while riding.
