I travel overseas 3-4 times a year and live in Ipswich. Several of my friends are also regular airport users. It's WAY faster and usually cheaper to just get a friend to drop you at the airport and pick you up again, rather than fighting with the suburban train system, changing trains, and paying the exorbitant prices for airtrain with two adults, a small child, and six pieces of luggage/carry-on. Ever been on Kuala Lumpur's airport train? Now THAT'S well designed.

Can't wait for the direct link from the airport to the Gold Coast to disappear once Cross River Rail is implemented. That exorbitant fare system of air train will really sting then.

Not sure why buying it back achieves anything, all it does is hide the cost through a complex taxation system. You talk about 50c fares... if you look up the running costs a previous $5 fair on a city bus is costing tax payers $10, now its costs them $9.50. And who benefits the most? The inner city who already have disproporaitely more wealth.

Last time I flew I was going to take the air-train to Roma St. But it ended up being cheaper for me to get a taxi. The worst was the 4 hour bus trip to Toowoomba. If only the state government listened to us and put in a passenger line. We haven't had one since 2019 when Covid hit and it never returned.

Well, that's how conservative governments work. In their minds infrastructure is intended to make their donors rich, NOT to solve societal problems. It was the same with the NBN. It was originally intended to provide fast internet access across the country, then the Liberals bastardized it so that their mates could make zillions out of it by selling a substandard service and then offering "upgrades" for a juicy extra fee.

God this is infuriating. Also it reminds me, I'm from Copenhagen and we also have some decent airport rail links. Only 15 minutes between it and downtown. But we have an upcoming municipal election and the current leading political party, the centre left leaning Social democrats, is scared theyre gonna be dethroned by a further left wing coalition with the Red green alliance (who actually got more votes than the social democrats in the previous municipal election here). So theyre sending in what they think is one of their best politicians and whats the first thing she proposes? a 50 DKK surcharge on all train trips to the airport... all to finance a giant megalomaniac artificial island and metro line to it that voters arent happy with due to environmental and democratic scandals with it. (Oh yeah the metro here is financed by a ponzi scheme structure based on loans so that previous right wing goverments could claim it "Wouldnt cost the tax payers a single penny", thats a whole other can of worms) Even so, this 50kr airport ticket tax makes absolutely no sense! There isnt a monopoly on transit to the airport, you have both a Metro line terminating there, a mainline railway with services onwards to Sweden and to the rest of Denmark where the airport is one stop out of many, and even on top of that you also have the city's busiest bus route, the 5C terminating at the airport! Plus the airport also works as a transit hub for other bus services like those to the town of Dragør. But to make matters even more stupid... the mayor candidate for this whole thing is on the ballot in Copenhagen municipality, but the airport isnt even in Copenhagen municipality! Its in Taarnby municipality! And the airport itself is majority owned by the national government after buying out the Ontario Teachers pension fund's share in it. The only part they have full control over is the M2 Metro line to the airport. The 5C bus is partially financed with Taarnby municipality where it also acts as a local service. And the mainline railway is owned by the Öresund bridge authority. And the proposal would also have to work around those who work at the airport. The mayor candidate claimed she would find a solution so that only people going to the airport for flights would be affected but how in the world would one even do that? Trying to give out some weird one of a kind discount card for people with employment at the airport would be a whole other can of worms, especially for people only working there for a short bit like Pilots on a long itinary for their airline! Oh and this is also all on top of Copenhagen having some of the most expensive public transit out of any city on planet earth, which a ton of people here arent thrilled about, and even having turned onto the complete opposite extreme, of demanding all public transit nationwide in Denmark should be free to ride (which I dont fully agree with but I can certainly see where theyre coming from. And even how to finance it, though again thats a whole other can of worms of ridiculous tax rebates for drivers and bollocks politics) Otherwise great video, and a really good piece to use for argumentation against PPP's in transit and these kinds of stupid overcharging measures. Hope you dont mind the rant btw, I have way too much I could go on about.

The 10pm cutoff means Airtrain services cover 95% of flights? That's amazing, they only seem to cover 50% of any international flights I've ever been on (usually they are running for departures, but closed for the return flight's arrival). I've had to walk past the "now running every 15 minutes" signs to get a taxi because the trains weren't running at all. It also amuses me that they have the same sign above the departure board, so it often says "now running every 15 minutes" then directly under that "next train in 22 minutes"

Private Public Partnerships are the most evils parts of modern governments and should rarely if ever happen Now specific to this airport line its one of the better ones in Australia in terms of convenience and price. Unlike your video example majority of people dont go from local station to domestic to international and back home The fare is above public transport rates but below the evil other deals in Melbourne (24$ one way for a bus) and Sydney (18$+ to go 3 stops) Perth did an amazing job withs it airport line (my hometown) but lets just say that mining money and advance planning plays a big part of their ability to do that I get the Brisbane line sits somewhere in the middle. Love that its finishing in 2036. Many toll roads and PPP Bull **** never expires, 99 years etc etc

Send this KZbin "How NOT to Build an Airport Rail Link" to ALL major TV networks....Send it to the Courier Mail & The Australian....Send it to ALL Political Parties & Local Members .........I have traveled the world extensively and the best experience I have with Cities is where i can get from my Aircraft seat to the middle of the City & my hotel as smoothly and quickly as possible with minimal cost,,,,,,,,I do use Sky Train to the Brisbane Airport sometimes, but I brace myself for frustration and expense........Well done to the producers of this video. In so many ways Brisbane is fantastic City but this buyback to The State Government stalemate is disgraceful and must not continue. Cheers Fellas

My guess with the double pillars is "we changed our mind"! The airport line is a single track from the old shopping centre to the domestic terminal (97% of the line and my guess was to save money on construction). So in order to run higher frequency services, they probably would have needed to install a passing point about half way down the line. My theory is they installed the start and finish pillars before changing their mind and deciding not to install the passing point, so they could either save more money and/or keep closer to the construction budget. Edit: I forgot to mention that my version of "higher frequency services" is every 5 minutes peek and every 7-10 off-peek. Ain't no one got time to wait 15 minutes for a train!

It’s not Train Station it’s Railway Station. Also it’s not a Viaduct. Viaduct must have equal spaced archers. There are no arches. The line not a spur it’s a branch line. I don’t know why people don’t use proper terminology.

The reason public transport is underutilized in Queensland is because it's infrequentl dirty and expensive. They need to stop trying to run public transport as a business.

At least we have a Rail Connection to the Airport… Recently I’ve been to the Brisbane Domestic Terminal and I can Confirm The bag collection bay is full of advertising for the Airtrain which are very misleading for Tourists Like you mentioned, AirTrain Claims to have Train Services every 15 Minutes which is True but the Train dwells at the Station for another 15 minutes before departing. I really do hope Queensland Rail and the Queensland Government do take ownership of the Line someday well before the Olympics

Here's a fun fact about Brisbane Airport: its safety officer closed it before it opened siting the fact that the gates had aircraft parked with insufficient clearance between wingips. It initially had to obtain special dispensation to operate until the issue could properly be resolved. I'm not sure what they did but I know this because I know the person who was the safety officer at the time.

I will have to say the cost for the airport is expensive. I live in Albion so the Airport line has come in handy. An uber cost me one way 30-40 from Albion so the train has come in handy for me as 1 person. But it is sooo annoying that the it stops at 1030! Why not until midnight?
