You need 11 figures per side, at most 16 in a roster, with some player roles limited (f.ex. 0-2 throwers in some teams). I'd say generally you can get by with one team box, maybe one or two separately sold "big guys" to accommodate for weaknesses/for flavor. Still, what is "optimal" to buy for a team varies, and google is your friend there. Regardless, it will be limited to at most 16 figures on the field at once, so the costs shouldn't be the worst (nb. adeptus mechanicus in WH40k). Finally, the game is extremely luck based and winning is imo mainly based on risk mitigation, so personally I'd recommend going at it casually for fun and following the "rule of cool"... i.e. pick what appeals most to your aesthetics. :) Hope this helped. :)

All the boxes has one full team that can be used ready to play, but some might not have the optimal selection of players. And, none of the boxes have a big guy in it, so if the team can have one and you want one, then one needs to be bought.

Also, do note that the teams are grouped to "tiers". F.ex. if you play a halfling team (tier 3) against wood elves (tier 1), be prepared to be the underdog... i.e. go with even more casual expectations than usual. Some teams like I guess Nurgle also start to shine mainly in longer tournaments where you grow/mutate your team from game to game.

The only place where you can't play with third party mini's is a gw store. So if you're heading to a tournament at Warhammer world you do need to have the gw team. Otherwise, as long as the team has the positionals needed and you can identify them by sight then play with whatever you like. I've seen someone take a rubber duck team before (at a friendly game not at tournament 😂)
