I look at IEW as writing education not implementation. Like kids still need to write like narrations or book reports or Literature analysis or research projects as they enter upper middle school and high school. But I wouldn’t worry about it, public schools push writing way too young. Your son didn’t so much have a gap as you just didn’t align him with common core, which makes it difficult as you are forced to follow those standards ❤

Most recently it was Real Science odyssey. We loved their astronomy unit but it was on the shorter side. The other one we tried was physics and studying the same area of science for an entire year was just too long.

Another option might be Moving Beyond the Page. Ashlee from Gathered and Grounded is using it with her bigger kids (I think 3/4th and 5/6th?)

I saw someone who used Real science odyssey. They bought 2 or 3 years and jumped between different courses, completing 1 unit from each. So they didnt have to do a full year on 1 topic. Obviously more expensive upfront but would be set up for a couple years.

@@HomeschoolWithTheClarksI just got Bookshark science after deliberating for a year and we LOVE it. We do it family style with my 3 kids (3.5 year old twins and 6.5 kindergartener) and have such a blast. I also don’t force my kids to write the answers in the worksheets, we just talk about the questions and answer orally. So fun ❤️❤️

Science is so hard! I think for my younger 2 we are going to do the moving beyond the page ones next year. I like the small units, we can spend a small amount of time or get really into them. You can buy a box with all the things needed for the experimenta in the level we are going to do, 8-10, I need this for next year as I have been avoiding experiments becauae I dont want to go buy some random stuff. My middle school kid is harder! I haven't found anythjng we both think looks interesting for next year.
@HomeschoolWithTheClarks9 ай бұрын
Finding middle school resources can be tough. I hope you both find something you love!
@Amber-dw9op9 ай бұрын
Have you tried the updated The Good and the Beautiful science? They whittled down the wordiness (but it's still scripted), it's very open-and-go, and usually only requires household items (or we watch the experiment videos if we don't have the materials handy). The units are short enough where we don't get burned out and can move on to a new unit. I love science, but I have other things to do! Also, I highly suggest doing science/history during breakfast or lunch-- you'll have a captive audience and activities can get messy with those subjects *edited to add there are extension activities for older kids, and they also have "little hearts and hands" for littles which was really sweet.

I haven’t tried it since they changed it but I will look into it. Thanks!
