imagine if Penn were a voiceover cohost during the show. Similar to the later parts of season 4 where he argues with Rhys, but more the opposite of Rhys. "oh how do you get rid of a body? LIKE YOUVE NEVER DONE THAT BEFORE" someone should at least do that in ai. would be hysterical

Joe Goldberg is probably one of the best-written sociopaths in TV history, and Penn Badgley *nailed* it. The man is an incredible actor.

Penn Badgley isn’t delusional, he knows that he’s playing as a detestable character. I agree with him, I’ll never understand why certain people like Joe Goldberg.

Lol hes great. Lemme tell you, from an experienced womans perspective, why woman are in love with the character, other than his looks. Its because thats how poorly women are treated in relationships usually and how hard it is to find a good guy. When Joe isnt killing or acting crazy, hes really affectionate and attentive and into his partner and mindful of their happiness. Thats how rare it is. Some women kid themselves into thinking they'd date a murderer just to have that.

3:04 this is actually my exact mindset while watching this show, they almost make Joe sympathetic but then he goes and keeps doing crazy shit and it's like "could you pretty please just be normal for five seconds so I can justify liking this character" 😭

If You is a love story then The Turner Diaries are about someone heroically saving america because the only person who thinks it's those things is the protagonist of the story and other delusional motherfuckers

If you read the book, Joe in the novel is not even remotely as l friendly-delusional as Joe in the TV version. Joe in the book is utterly unlikeable on every level and I think he knows that is the real joe, not the version he plays on TV. I think he also would like people to not romanticize a fictional killer, as people in this country often do.

"You" as a tv show is really interesting to compare to the original book its based off. From pure market demographics, books are easier to succeed with less consumer readership, so Caroline Kepnes creates a Joe Goldberg that is really gross, frightening and misogynistic, knowing there will be plenty of people that will be invested in seeing what happens to his character. However, tv shows need to appeal to a wide base of people and have higher margins for continued success due to production cost. So you end up with the tv show Joe, who has a whole subplot based around helping his neighbours kid from an abusive guardian and who is obviously played by the extremely attractive Penn Badgley

"I don't wanna please people's feelings anymore, it's exhausting." Yeah, he got that right. My cousin would tell me about this show all the time, and I don't know why, but I kind of just brushed it off because it was on Netflix, and usually i don't watch anything on Netflix, but I FINALLY 😂 started watching it... i got say, it definitely can draw someone in. I'm currently, at this very moment, watching season 1 episode 4.

Maybe penn is just creating an image of a guy who just hates the idealogies of Joe's personality meanwhile he is secretly just the same as joe?

I’m with Penn. I always thought the love story angle was ironic, but too many people take it at face value.
