The whole issue with Gwen is that the writers and the characters kept trying to _insist_ Gwen was soooo beautiful (Arthur, Lancelot, various bandits and even Gwaine) while not once did any of the characters (except the creepy evil Sarum) refer to Morgana's beauty. It was not believable because Angel may be pretty but she is not stunning - most of us aren't and that is no reflection on her but if beauty was to be the focus she was miscast. Had the writers instead focused on Gwen's alleged kindness, honesty or Queenly leadership skills the character and casting might have worked wonderfully however they didn't do that either. They just kept _telling_ the audience Gwen was beautiful and all these queenly attributes but previous episodes _showed_ her to be quite the opposite - reluctant to do good, to help Mordred/Morgana, awkward in her dealings with others, passive, quick to judge and uncaring of anyone outside of her own circle. In the end she was bland, no struggle, no qualities. Again, it is no reflection on the actress herself but the direction of the show.

Sebastian was underwritten in the novel, and so I think of Anthony Andrews as co-creator of this character with Waugh. If Jeremy Irons played Sebastian, we'd have a completely different character. (For what that character might have been like, listen to Irons's brilliant reading of the audiobook. Andrews' Sebastian is virile by comparison, and in my mind, that much more compelling and enchanting.)
