Your dog is not a guide dog guide dogs have to wear the guide harness provide from there organization when you get the dog and guide dogs don’t wear patches that’s for a service dog

I am going to respond to this because I think it will be educational for people. My dog is from an international guide dog Federation program in the united states. That program uses both traditional guide harnesses, along with the new Ruffwear Unifly guide dog harness. This harness was designed specifically with guide dog mobility instructors, blind people, and guide dogs. She is wearing that harness in the video. She is also wearing a high visibility vest under the harness, because I work in a setting where we can be in dangerous areas and my workplace and myself wanted her to be highly visible. I encourage you to watch the video again. Watch her working. Watch her guiding me into specific places. Watch her finding objects for me. Watch her stop at elevation changes to indicate that there is a drop off. Watch her guide. Don't look at the gear, look at the job. Look at the dog's behavior. Now, regarding your comments about specific gear, a guide dog typically does need a harness to do its job, but that is not an absolute truth. Many programs that are internationally recognized do teach their dogs some rudimentary guide work with only the leash. Of course, for a guide dog to do all of its tasks, it needs to wear a stiff harness. Though the harness that Cindi my dog is wearing in this video does not look like a traditional harness, it is stiff and functions the same way as a traditional harness does. She can pull into it to guide me, or back me up. The handle is stiff and does not Buckle when pressure is put into it. The gear does not define the service dog, the tasks the dog is trained to perform, and the disabled Handler that it helps makes a dog a service dog. A guide dog is simply a type of service dog. My dog is, absolutely, a guide dog. I am, absolutely, legally blind. My dog is trained to guide me safely because I cannot see. Guide dogs might wear gear that has patches on it. For example, there are vests that attach to guide harnesses so the dog has some more visibility in public. Guide dog users can choose to attach whatever they want to their dog's harness. And many do to help inform the public of the dog's status and not to interact with it. What I have said here is applicable to guide dogs in the United states. I hope this helps.

Also I just want to add to what the author of this video said the dog is wearing the appropriate guide dog gear the harness from ruffwear is only available for guide dog users through the school they got their dog from also we can have patches and leash wraps if we want to make our guides more visible what makes her a guide dog is her tasks of guiding not how she looks

The collie guide dog most likely from The Guide Dog Foundation. They had a collie program a while back. Now they only train labs, golden, crosses, and poodles.

When did you purchase the Unifly harness and how much did it cost at that time? Ruffwear does have that 50% off work working dogs but I’m sure this was already taken into account. I know of a trainer who used to work for the organization that I’m getting my second poodle from. I wonder if trainers have to be employed by an IGDF organization and how does Ruffwear check?

Your description of the low-vision world matches mine. I lost my vision over night to a blood pressure eppisode. I've had 2 years of re-learning everything. Even though I have some vision, and I can navigate without a white cane, I learned to use it to identify my self as much as to identify my path. It took a bit of humility, but I am much more confident in working through the world, so I feel much better interacting with people. I understand the hesitation, that many have, but the white cane and sunglasses have been the biggest step forward for me. Of course, I'm an "old man" and the younger folks may feel that they are giving up too much pride using a cane, but I will keep preachin' it!

Where did you get a poodle guide dog? I’m researching on guide dogs. I have a visual impaired. I’m just not a lab or golden retrievers.Im also looking for how I can train my own dog.

There are only two guide dog schools currently in the US who trains Standard Poodle guides. Those organizations are The Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown, (Long Island) NY and Guide Dogs of the Desert is Palm Spring, CA. People who have a documented dog allergy are considered for poodles. You can’t just be not a retriever person. Poodles aren’t for everyone. I’ve had both retrievers and poodles and the poodles tend to be more of a challenge for various reasons. At the moment The Guide Dog Foundation isn’t taking applications for new poodle handlers. I was a returning poodle handler at GDF. I’ve thought about going to GDD since I live near Palm Spribgs, CA.

Great podcast. I wish you could talk more about the owner trained route, as that is actually what I have done,or am still in the process of doing. I adopted my dog in December of 2021 and when I did, she was totally just going to be a pet, until I realized just how smart she is. I've done most of the commands with her that you talked about, except hop up. I really didn't understand that one, though I remember a teacher using it all the time when I was at the school for the blind. Also, instead of back, I use turn around. All throughout school, and even in my adult life, I was always told I relied entirely to much on tactile feedback, and that I just wasn't active enough for a dog, and nobody thought it would be a good fit. I don't even know that any of the guide dog schools would have considered me a good candidate. But walking with my dog is so much better, and she has given me a confidence I never had with a cane, and I was a life long cane user until I started training with my dog. And going back to the cane now is like going from the latest iPhone all the way back to an old school flip phone, actually worse. Like going from a computer back to engraving stone tablets. lol Wish I had done it so much sooner. I think I could have been so much more independent in college than I was, as campus was pretty big, and even in all my 5 years there, I never really learned it. But now at 37 and with my dog, I really feel like she is helping me to live my best life.

Haha it's me. Thank you for this video. I can cross the street with different technics like follow others or watching the direction how cars flow. With ppl showing stuff exactly the same: "haha so funny" "yeah that color what XY is wearing is amazing" "see that building there, you have to go there. Sure I can haha (of course not)" . I always have to put extra effort into pretending that its all oke while putting extra effort into figuring out doing that specific thing another way. So many times i end up awkward which I compensate by being extra nice cause ppl react the best for that and you don't have to deal with ppl's reactions on the top of it all. But this is all isolating I guess. Im constantly "working" while others are just chiling or doing routine stuff. Lets say to cross the street in indonesia where I live its a whole scary peocess cause the traffic never stops. So if i wanna by something i walk on my side of the road to find that specific thing just to avoid crossing, even if I have to walk far. Or often times I dont recognize ppl's faces so I have to pretend I know them and ask questions or say stuff that will help me figure out who that person is. And the list goes on and on. I havent even talked about faking on job interviews

So one other question just popped up in my mind comparing this harness to a regular traditional leather harness, it looks like it covers a lot more area the dog my concern would be that it would cause the dog to be too hot especially if using it in the southern parts of the state. It’s a padded material, but it also covers most of the dogs sides bottom and front literally half the dog with no air holes. It looks to me like it would cause a dog to overheat quite easily. I could see that being a huge problem I don’t think it would be a problem in the northern part of the states but definitely down here with a temperature can reach 100° and you know 90% humidity. It would be really warm for the dog to wear

This harness seems very similar to guide dogs for the blind Swiss harness know years ago. I actually tested the Swiss harnesses when they were being tested for the school. I hated it it was probably one of the worst harness I’ve ever used in my entire life number one you couldn’t feel the dog number two there were no I know people call them ears they keep the harness handle from flying over the dogs head so it would constantly happen would be I would over walk the dog, and the artist would literally go over his head. It was a complete mess. It also killed my hand, even though it was light. I had six other guy, dog users, test harness, not one person actually liked it compare to the traditions partners. Because of those problems no absolutely awesome to have a detachable handle is also nice for the dog and so my last thoughts on it where I believe everybody should be given a chance to try different harnesses when they go for their dog something on my other people are definitely not.. I do love the fact that the harness handle can be adjusted on the unit fly to be offset or regular and I do love the positioning of the handle for this reason case in point I have a wound on my foot and they wanted me to wear a boot well, I quickly found out that wasn’t going to work, because I was afraid I would step on my dogs paws not injured. I could walk in stride so the office that feature gives you a chance if you need extra. . I also like the fact that it’s soft for the dog but the fact is it wouldn’t fit over my dogs that I have a labrador was very big jowls.. I would like to know how the harness handle reacts, and if it has the same problem that the Swiss harness had with not having rabbit ears to keep the harness handle in place I actually found that one of the worst problems that I experienced trying to walk when you’re handle is going left to right you know when you’re trying to follow your dog is not easy_ All that said, I would really love the chance to try it. You never know him, but I do have concerns based on the Swiss harness design that was probably similar to this, but I still would love to try it they would just have to make the opening a lot more bigger in the head.

Fantastic presentation of the harness from RUFFWEAR. I do like the policy that are you SFWEAR has in place because of the fake service dogs that are out there. Anything we can do to stop people using their pets and purchasing harnesses and pretending that they have a service dog is a good thing. I give are you FFW ER huge points for this itself.
