That was a pretty low-power takeoff - in fact the power reduction to max continuous after takeoff was very slight. I suppose with all that runway, why bother stressing the engines if you don't have to?

It was Richard Basehart's voice that brought it all to a close. What a voice, and he would pass away only a month later.

What looks like a ufo 🛸 in the sky was actually a stage holding Lionel Ritchie being lowered to the ground by an army helicopter, I was outside at the USC Olympics village at the time and also watched the rehearsals for it, the most awesome and spectacular times in the city of Los Angeles

Has anyone seen the red barns that say "See Rock City" on them? You'll find them at Cracker Barrel. By the way, this was probably a summer thunderstorm that formed in the heat of the day.

Strange to me that they'd risk an accident with helicopters and tethers for this stunt. Imagine one mistake and you've killed thousands of spectators

5:53 Lightning right on top of them. Flash and bang at the same time. I see all the comments about the rain, and getting wet should be the last of anyone's concerns. A lady is yelling to "Get inside!", and should be because lightning is dangerous and can kill you. My guess is that this one came up really quick. It must've gone from sunshine to storm in a heartbeat.

I watched thunderbirds on their base at WILLIAMS AFB, yes until the base was closed and was not impressed. The original diamond was 4 individual planes taking off (at the air race, which was TOTALLY COOL), one after the other. I could not believe, had to be a mistake, NOPE, 1, 2, 3 and 4 individual takeoffs. And then then all planes landed individually. Here's how the ANGELS took off and landed during that time. FACTS, JUST FACTS. This was just a repeated operation. 4 then 2 take off, then 6 land. I always ask my USAF friends to go to the show with me and see their faces when they realize, NAVY is a serious Aviation service. First US American ACE in Vietnam: NAVY, NOT AF, LT Cunningham, fir American into SPACE, NAVY Armstrong, First Man on the MOON, NAVY, I can go on and on. Who was the leader in AVIATION??? ARMY

I remember watching this as a kid. Glad to see the video now after all these years as I haven't seen it since 1984. Another video shows the "alien". You can certainly hear helicopter sounds but maybe those are from helicopters flying around the stadium providing the aerial view(s)? I always wondered how they pulled this stunt off.
