As a guy who has multiple 12 gauges and 5.56 AR-15s Unless you live in the country, stick to a handgun, because a rifle round, especially a fmj will tumble through a person and may still make it out a background wall, and if you miss and live in town….. Here in Iowa most farmers have firearms and I’m no exception, but honestly with cattle outside and a big ass propane tank I’m gonna be weary of my 5.56 or 30-06 And yea I have .223 soft points for defense if need be and multiple others ready at all times but seriously? No you don’t need a 12 gauge you really need to practice with a Glock or something like that if you live in a town with neighbors that don’t live a mile or 2 away😂

It was suggested by most professional defense teachers, that smaller shot then double 00 buck shot used in a house. So you don't kill a love one in another room. AR rifle rounds could go through the wall and kill neighbors in their house. Not that I agree with Biden.

Too much time sighting, point and shoot if the rifle is dialed in or not. That's how us military guys do it in CQB drills and actual combat. At that distance, you are not going to miss.

With snap caps, I can find the half cock ledge on the sear. I use the finger method and release the grip safety before lowering the hammer to the half cocked position. I do not carry nor I do store in this position. I also do not do this with live rounds.

I recently bought a newish but used 1911. It's not like my old 1911 in this exact way. But every once in a while, If I manually run the slide, the hammer falls to that quarter cock position. I think it's got a problem. It should stay full cocked after the slide action. I ran some magazines just fine, never did it once while firing. Just when it's empty. I'll tear it down and see for myself later this week. I've never taken one down that far yet. Got a great book on it, just need the proper sized pin pusher tool.

As someone who's been shooting since I was a kid, I'll take the 12 gauge (though, not a double barrel, pump or semi auto) over the AR at that range any day. If I'm having to shoot at 30+ yards, then maybe I'm changing to the rifle, but the reliability and power of a shotgun is unmatched when a long gun is on the table for self defense. Of course, most of the time you're going to just have a handgun unless you're at home, so both points become invalid.
