You didn't have to go down and then up again at Tanah Merah MRT station when the train took you from the airport. You guys didn't pay attention to the announcement in the train prior to the train reaching Tanah Merah station. To get onto the connecting train to the city, you should have exited the train on the left. The doors on BOTH sides of the train are opened. So there's no need for you to go down and then up again.

Apapun sentiasa berhati hati.
Since you have no local guides, you are eating many of the of the meals which are not typical local. You should be able to tell the Chinese from the non-Chinese in Malacca. Speak to the local Chinese, except those who are Babas & Nyonyas (Straits born Chinese, whose ancestors were mostly Fujian (Minnan-speaking) several generations ago who mostly cannot speak Chinese) and they would be most happy to advise you what to se, what to eat, etc. In other parts of Malaysia, the local Chinese can help you enjoy your stay better. Enjoy your stay in Malaysia. (A native of Malacca, now living in Sydney)
