Very strange month (September) fishing for smallies in the St Lawrence. Experienced the same thing this past week. The warm temps pushed them deeper for the last 3 weeks. Two days ago, after a mild cold front we didn't do to well and on the way back in saw half a dozen in the shallow cove that we stay in. Went out after lunch to check them out and found several beds and smaller bu cks attending to them. Since I don't fish for spawning fish we went out to adjacent shoals next to shallow coves and did well in 10 to 20 ft. Very strange. The last 3 weeks they have been in 35 to 50ft.

@DaveMigliore-wt6dg8 күн бұрын
That's from the environment being so f***** up that they don't know when to spawn

Weird that he calls himself a harbor master. Pretty sure that he isn’t a true harbor master. Just on paper.

Crazy, I thought I was seeing them on beds a few weeks back, just wasn't sure. Saw some on beds in the river in August a few years back too

Wild! That suggest to me that photoperiod is one of the triggers for spawning. I think this can happen in nature. I work in horticulture and some plants that bloom in spring only are sometimes triggered to bloom in fall when photoperiod and temperature is similar

That’s insane for a bed fish. Good catch and tight lines brother

As one who actually does eat bass, I can tell you I've caught quite a few smallies through the years past from July to September that have eggs and milk sacks. I've always been confused about it.
@inaslump9 күн бұрын
Not all fish spawn every season.the younger fish will hold them a year until fish feels the eggs are mature enough..
