Better models like the Leeds reels have room for your fingers between the rim and the seat so you don't have to hold them flat

Modern centrepins are over drilled for my taste. Yes, they are marginally more efficient and certainly lighter, but my mental image of a perfect 'pin would look something like Young's Trudex.

I love using a centrepin for all sorts if fishing - from trotting rivers to stalking big carp and pike....Just for the pure pleasure and direct feel and play of the fish ...using fingers on the rim of drum as a narural clutch and feeling every tiny flick and movenment of the fish...fabulous fun!...except for the occasional wrapped knuckles from fast spinning handle pins 😂

One of my closes friends that has sadly passed, could cast a center pin reel with ease, he always amazed me how he could do it, the bait (or lead) went out as if he was using a fixed spool reel. His name.. Jim Shrive ! One day we were fishing for pike, myself, Bob church and Jim.. Jim set up a 10ft rod, his airial center pin, with a small dead bait and he was casting any distance you like.. it was fantastic to watch, Bob was fishing some way away.. when he returned he said to me.. has Jim been showing off his casting again ! i replied yeah but he's amazing ! Bob told me theres only a hand full of fishermen in the uk that can do it !! Jim's been doing it since he was a kid.. They have both passed now and i miss them dearly, we had some great days together.. RIP Guys Geoff Smith.

Nothing beats using a centrepin for trotting. My favourite reel is a Richard Carter Avon Classic, a proper centrepin built by a quality engineer.

My first reel was a Marquis 6 my dad bought me at the Pall Mall shop way back in the scorching summer of 1976. I still have it and it still operates as good as the day it was purchased.

If having a split cane isn't enough exclusive for you, what can be more exclusive than having it made for you, up to one's personal specifications. Absolutely amazing experience, I presume. The problem with bamboo is the lack of information. Most of us don't exactly know what that is, how to use and maintain it.

My stepGrandad, Edward Sowerbutts made the poles in Walthamstow and then in his shed in Epping, Essex. He has passed now, and his daughter Jane, still lives in the family home in Epping. She does not have a single pole to remember her father by.

Just purchased a hardy sdsl 6000 and it showed up as right hand retrieve. I use left hand but can’t seem to find any info on managing that particular reel. Would you recommend trying to contact hardy for instruction or just waiting until I can get to the nearest fly shop (happens to be 2 hrs away)?

Really nice video thanks for sharing. I once fished the boat pool where she caught the fish and stood next to the bargie stone on the Murthly side. It was quite an experience as its an ultra rough wade over very rocky ground. Given the number of scissors and pliers I found lying on the river bed I expect many anglers have taken a tumble at that spot.

Nice video! My ABU collecion has gone way out of hands, I got about 20 vintage ambassadeur reels and 10 newer models and some abumatics and a few 444 Cardinals, old tackle boxes and lures in original boxes. Every reel is restored and works perfectly and I use them when I go fhishing.

Just bought a 6'-5" fly rod the makers label says Great Lakes it looks like wood but I believe it's fiberglass cork handle with two reel seat rings , I've looked around and couldn't find out when it was made, it was at an antique store and the guy I bought it from was closing out his rental space and I got it for $ 11.25 and then I found a JC Higgins model 312.31130 fly reel and it was $10.00 ,what can you tell me about the rod when was it made ?

I've heard of this set, but never seen it before. Was kinda shocked as I was certain it was a two-handed fly kit due to it's name. None the less, that little reel looks gorgeous!

the loud clicker isn't used for a drag system here in Canada. It's just to keep the line tight while walking from one fishing spot to another. And we use a fair bit of weight on the line when salmon fishing, that's why we like it strong. Only wankers turn the clicker on when they have a fish on the line, presumably to make sure everyone knows they caught a fish.

Hi Tom, thought you may be the person to ask, I remember seeing a centre pin that would rotate 90 degrees to allow you to cast like a fixed spool reel, once cast you returned it to the normal position with a click! I can't find one anywhere, I thought maybe you could shed some light on this for me? Many thanks
