I completely agree. Eventually the term ends and you have to give a grade. You have to move onto the next set of objectives.
@yaymath
@yaymath 12 күн бұрын
Absolutely. We must draw the line somewhere, and the end of the term is objectively the place to do it. It sounds like her point is that prior to the term ending, if the students are willing to work for it, they can have another chance to demonstrate mastery, and remediate their grades well within the term period. Do you generally jive with that approach?

At my school, we have a growth piece mid quarter to demonstrate skills and a performance task at the end that replaces that grade. Because they get a second chance, some students will not put as much effort into the first one since it "doesn't actually count". Additionally, some have expressed that it's better to do bad in the growth piece because that way they can demonstrate improvement throughout the quarter when they have to talk about their progress in the student led conference at the end of the semester.

I appreciate your method and passion. I have always had difficulty with word problems and until now I think I know why. For whatever reason I had a compulsion to activate my math brain this morning. The last time I was required to really engage my math brain was in statistics as a requirement for my bachelors degree. After following along with your method I came to the conclusion that in fact I always asked the questions but to far into detail, such as, what other fruits is she selling other than apples and plums. Am I to assume the apples and plums are the only fruits she is selling? Then why use the plural form for fruits just to label them out individually and without stating that she only sells two types of fruits to start with. Which in that case it doesn't matter what types of fruits they are. Is is 50 pieces of fruit or does 50 fruits indicates that it may indicate the there are 50 different types of fruit. If Suzy sells 2 types of fruit and sells a total of 50 pieces of that fruit in a day, how many of each fruit is she selling if she is selling 8 more than the other? I'm 54 now with my 5th child going into equations and I have struggled even with this newer math technique. I really appreciate the channel being up and letting my activate my brain a bit. I'll keep trying.

I don't know anything but man what a nice atmosphere in this class. I literally never experience this. It has nice family living room during Xmas vibes. They caught up and expressed how the whole thing didn't make sense *right away*, in any class I attended at any age kids would have said nothing at all (I know, sad.)
