Your not speeding along, recklessly, oblivious to other people. No one 'owns' the place, as long as everyone is aware, and can see, horses, bikes, people, whatever, as long as it's NOT motorised.

Some bozo had a go at me for riding my bike ‘on an ancient monument’, meanwhile there are cows trampling and shitting all over it along with dogs and their owners. I pointed this out to him. Some people just have nothing better to worry about. As long as you respect the countryside there shouldn’t be an issue. Not like your bombing along the trail posing a danger to walkers is it. We just need to share spaces and get along.

@mtbtrailshredders 15 сағат бұрын
@Reece-h5l The land itself has no inherent law; rather, it is governed by a complex web of regulations and interpretations shaped by human interests. These rules often exist in shades of grey, influenced by competing priorities rather than universal fairness. When it comes to access and outdoor rights, England lags significantly behind Scotland’s more progressive approach. That said, no one is stopping-nor can they stop-me from enjoying the mountains as they were meant to be experienced: freely and without unnecessary restriction.

This is really simple and only a “grey” area if your trying to circumvent the legal position ! Footpaths, people on foot, bridleway, people, horses, bikes ! If you have the land owner’s permission you can ride where they allow you but you would definitely have a duty of care to others using a right of way, this should be respected. There’s a strange sense of entitlement with cyclists and seemingly some ignorance !

And mountain bikers are always super happy to see walkers on MTB trails aren’t they? Just because you want to ride the footpath doesn’t mean you should. You may have been respectful, but some bikers can be rude and stupid and think nothing of flying down that same path at high speed where walkers are 100% not expecting you to be there. So yeah, it sucks that footpaths are not for cyclists, but there’s plenty of other trails out there.

I hike a lot. And I cycle a lot. On road and off-road. The hiker here is legally correct (assuming he's correct about it being a footpath not a bridleway). Cycling on a footpath is forbidden. Cycling on a bridleway is permitted. The issue with a lot of "it's ok it's slow" stuff is that it's very soon followed by some v poor behaviours on the downhill.
