Quick question regarding abortion and body autonomy. If you have religious freedom to discriminate and is protected by law, bc they fake a situation that it was not happening (the possible request of services from a business agains their religion beliefs) Can someone with a kidney problem that needs a transplant, can they bring a lawsuit, demanding a that another person that is healthy, not a relative and a match donor be force to donate a kidney to the sick one? Just to test the courts; can that be possible?

I am an atheist but I did vote for Trump. For me he is a hero and he will end the war in Ucraine. And he is going to solve the migrant crises. Am I worried about my Trans rights as a Transperson? No. I dont think Trump cares about that. He just needed votes from his christian followers to win but he himself is not a christian and Melania has also power to prevent him doing the wrong thing. Melania is a progressive in my opinion.

Trump has never cared about being popular. He has only ever been concerned about getting his way. I will bet that he will do a lot of very unpopular things, including not giving up the presidency until he is entirely unable to serve, and for certain implementing all of Project 2025. He also has a governmental trifecta, so be sure he will get most of what he wants done. Brace, and be ready to do everything we can to resist. Mama Duck may need to become Mama Goose, or Mama Bear, or Mama Moose. We do have the Attorney General out now: It's (horrors of all horrors) Matt Goetz, a person who has been accused of having sex with minors. Fits perfectly with Trump's misogynistic ideals. Why would he appoint a Secretary of Education when he's just going to do away with the Department of Education? If he does appoint one, it will probably be someone who was home schooled, and didn't get further than Kindergarten, and doesn't see the need to educate kids beyond that. If you can keep the population stupid, it's more likely that you can get them to do what you want.

I wonder how Doug Wilson can be so oblivious. The creed (Nicene or otherwise) is not something all Christians subscribe, e.g. The Orthodox Church*. And lot of non-denominational Christians do not see the more established churches to be really Christian. And forget the Mormons, JWs, Muslims, etc. Another Friendly Atheist subscriber here. *Notably the filio que clause.

Collins of MN has a voting record 65% in line with Trump during his 1st administration. She voted NO on convicting him of abuse of power. She voted NO on convicting him of obstructing Congress. She voted YES to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. I would not rely on Collins's judgement regarding supposed pressure from a MAGA Congress such that she could be any kind of firewall against their/Trump's agenda. Also, shes about to be 72 and is up for reelection in 2026. It could be a gain for the Democrats if the tide doesn't turn red before 2026, but whomever it goes to they wont have the seniority for prized committee appointments.

I think the next administration will be focused on rewarding the oligarchy with tax cuts, deregulation and favorable legislation. It seems like many oligarchs are not especially religious. Religion is a tool to pander to a certain segment of the electorate. I do think some state will try to ban birth control and Griswold v. CT will be reexamined.

My concern as been for a long time, the rise of Christian Nationalism and the impact on us atheists.
@ChompchompyerdedКүн бұрын
It's been a concern of mine since I was in middle school in the early 1970's. In the state I live in, it's been a problem starting even earlier than that. I spent over 30 years of my life living away from the state in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK. I came back (reluctantly) to a state which was far more starkly Christian/Christian Nationalist than when I left, and it has only become worse each year that I've been back. I don't have much time left in my life, but I'll be darned if I'll be forced to join a religion, especially when I have never a day in my life been a member or believer in any religion. They can pray for me to their hearts' content, but it isn't going to change me. I'd rather be burned at the stake.

Evangelicals are willing to overlook Trump's immoral character because Trump will be able to enforce the Evangelicals agenda of dismantling the Dept of Education "woke" agenda (DEI, sex education, black history, etc.) and enforce a Christian World View. Many Evangelicals will tell you they aren't voting for Trump, they are voting for their children and grandchildren's future.

It didn’t work, unfortunately, and I’m now no contact with them. I think it’s interesting how I internalized the lessons of love and compassion and empathy that I grew up with, while they were only paying lip service to those qualities and have simply been waiting for someone to tell them what to do and how to live.

Thank you for a very nice discussion. If your debate opponent was not using a method of continuous testing and comparison to find better tentative understandings, he was not using abduction. Abduction is how we add new experience and evidence-based theories to the ecology of ideas. Those interested in this way of thinking might look into Dewey’s instrumentalism, Toulmin argumentation, and the grounded theory method of Glaser and Strauss. Like natural processes, the method is ongoing and evolving. Daniel Hulter has written a fine article on abduction at aodnetwork.
