This video is nothing but a hit piece on post 1972 GM cars. What exactly is a GNX replica? A T-Type, any Grand National or any turbo 6 that wasn’t a limited addition GNX? Anyone who knows the history of muscle cars knows the show was over starting in 1971 when GM instituted a compression ratio cap of 8.5:1 on all engines to ensure capability with the coming low and unleaded gasoline. Ford and Chrysler followed suit in 1972. The big 3 + AMC did the best they could during this time with the restrictions they were legally obligated to follow. The Vega was never marketed as a muscle car. It was an import fighter although they did make the Cosworth. Same with the Citation. Automakers were trying to steer people away from muscle cars and into personal luxury coupes during this era because the federal government all but outlawed muscle cars. Although its performance was very lackluster, the 1977 Can Am was the last true muscle car by definition. A mid size car with a full size car engine. It was equipped with the most powerful engine GM offered at the time, the W72 400. By definition the Camaro (and Firebird/Trans Am for that matter) weren’t muscle cars, they were technically pony cars. You seem to pick on Pontiac specifically. If it wasn’t for them keeping the Firebird/Trans Am respectable during these years, we wouldn’t have the modern Camaro, Charger/Challenger and Mustang. Remember Ford introduced the Mustang II in 1974 on a Pinto platform that didn’t even offer a V8 option in 1974.

The only muscle car on your list was a Torino. The cats you showed were the result of the oil crisis. That was the sign of the times. If you modified all these cars, take all the emissions stuff off and these cars would be beasts.

The Elite was a malaise era cruiser. The EXP was the epitome of fashion (barf!) over function and the Maverick was actually a really good little car. The detuned 302 was done on purpose to not pull sales from the Mustang. In high school lots of kids drove them and modified them to the point they could take on Mustangs without embarrassing themselves. Take an Elite today and drop a Ford turbo V-6 in it and you'd have the best of both worlds.

The Elite was a midsize personal coupe intended to compete with the Monte Carlo, Cutlass Supreme, and Grand Prix. It was never intended to be a "muscle car". Neither was the Fairmont Futura or most of the other Fords on the list.

You must be a chevy trained idiot! You might be a democrat too with all your faults information, or you could be with the Lame stream media. The Elite was a mid size family car, and learn how to READ, it was a Fu tura not a futur a! You KNOW nothing of the subject you speak. You just threw up pictures and just made up SH*T. Heck you misspoke, and jumbled words with pictures that had nothing to do with where you were. You also was NOT a teenager in the 1970's!! ALL engines Ford, chevy, Mopar lost horsepower in the 1970 due to government regulations. When the Ford 6cyl 200ci engine came out in 1964 it had 140hp. The 250ci 4.1 liter came out in 1969 and was rated at 155hp by 1972 it was rated at 98hp. Chevy and Mopar went thru the same changes. As for what you listed as "sports cars" with 4 cylinders and 6 cylinders were NOT sports cars. My 69 Mustang with 351w from factory was rated at 300hp with 4bbl. From a peak of 230 horsepower in 1968-1969, the 302 V8 bottomed out at barely 130 horsepower in the mid-1970s. By the end of the decade. My 82 GT 302 was rated at 150hp. Yeah I went off but if you're going to talk about a subject you really need to know it or research it.

The ONLY one that was a Muscle Car was the 70 Ford Torino, The Ford Elite, the 8th Gene Thunderbird, The Fairmont was a mid-size Family car, The EXP was an attempted JDM style ricer killer, The Maverick and Mustang II was a subcompact gas saver, and the Foxbody Mustang was a Pony car.

It's good to see a video honoring this era. Even though the muscle era was in decline by '73 (with cars becoming heavier with safety regs, burdened with emissions control, and beleaguered with fuel economy demands), these cars still had personas that will never be equaled. Besides, with a little ingenuity and the right tools/know-how, it wasn't too hard to get around the emissions crap. Later, when ECUs were added, bypassing got a whole lot tougher....

So emissions and fuel economy affected cars from 72 on. Got it. What American cars of that era were not duds in comparison to earlier counterparts? Btw, the 73 Grand Am could be had with the same engines as the 73 GTO (only different by front bumper and dash) which was only slightly slower than the muscle car that started it all, the 64 GTO while handling better than any other GTO until the 2003-2006. GNX replica? You mean the Grand National or the Regal T-Type?

As a stock setup in drag racing the hemi was all over the Boss 9. The Boss 9 was woefully undercarbureted, couldn't breathe through the factory ram air, and was exhausted restricted because it was shoehorned into the Mustang. In Pro Stock there were no such limitations, and Bob Glidden, the legend knew how to wring every last hp out of it in the 80s. Of course the DRCE which had a drastically better valve train architecture led Oldsmobile and Dodge well into the 90s and later Chevrolet, never looked back. The 428 scj was a way better strip engine and held many NHRA class records.
