Cool to get a glimpse into some titles I'm not collecting. I was curious about Redcoat, but never checked it out. After watching your video, you've got me potentially interested in the Horizon Experiment stuff and the Wolverine mini. Might check some of these out digitally. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thanks for watching!! Much appreciated! Redcoat has been really fun, very much in the vein of a National Treasure style adventure if the main character was an immortal Han Solo type. Wolverine has been fun, even though I feel as if I’ve been a bit hard on it! Horizon titles seem intriguing, but I don’t love that there isn’t a promise of second issues. Cool ideas, but makes it harder to fully commit.

@CarlsCollection Yeah, that is a bit of a bummer about the Horizon stuff. I mostly want to check out Wolverine for the Capullo art haha! Redcoat is probably the highest on my list out of all of them. I'm very intrigued by the premise.

Nice, Carl! Well I appreciate that you gave Absolute Wonder Woman a shot, as I was curious to see what you'd think of it. Personally, I feel that other than changing up a few things for the origin, it read like a million other comic book stories. Tell the origin, get up to present day, bring in the antagonist to threaten the hero and end the story on a cliffhanger showing the hero in peril. So ultimately I just kept asking myself, "What's the point?". I literally would like to know what the point is from whoever came up with the idea of the Absolute line at DC. It reads like any Elseworlds story that has already been done. What's the end game here? Unless someone had thought of a incredibly unique idea to revolutionize these characters into different and even cooler versions than the originals (which these titles so far are Absolutely NOT!), then I can only conclude that this is just the latest of endless attempts to throw shit at the wall and see if any of it sticks. It's not that I thought it was bad, it's that there's literally NOTHING special or particularly interesting about it, so it just feels pointless. I will say, the 1st issue of Absolute Batman suddenly seems even better than I originally thought, compared to this. I'm looking forward to trying Absolute Superman, but my expectations are tempered. We'll see! I've always enjoyed series where different creative teams do each issue, but I also understand how jarring it can be to go from one style/approach to the next, every 20 pages of story that goes by. Not sure if I'll ever try The Last Halloween though, since I've still never even read Dark Victory.
@CarlsCollection

I largely agree with you here, it was certainly more formulaic in its structure, but I did enjoy some of the differences in the origin. My takeaway, and it’s only gotten stronger since reading and recording the video, is that it felt like a fun prologue to a movie that has the likelihood of not holding my interest. There wasn’t much there to drive me to pick up the next issue. It’ll end up on the DC digital app in a few months and that is likely when I may revisit future issues. One thing I forgot to mention, and I think it played a bigger part in my visual enjoyment of the issue was the incredibly strong color work, especially in those horizontal DPS’s. Not something I typically single out but I very much should’ve in my review. Truth be told, Dark Victory…i need to reread that as I really can’t remember anything about it outside of Robin being introduced. I also remember not enjoying jt as much as Long Halloween. I’d probably find more enjoyment revisiting that than I will continuing Last Halloween.

@@CarlsCollection It felt like "a fun prologue to a movie that has the likelihood of not holding my interest."? You're a riot! But yeah, there was nothing in it that made me think I need to come back for the second issue. At least Batman intrigued me enough, for more than one reason, to make me want to see what happens next. I agree that the colors were pleasant. The art was very "indy" and not great looking all over, but I found had some nice moments is spots. I appreciate the thoughts on Dark Victory. The more I think about it, the more I feel there's no need to read it. Which after all, is pretty much how I've always felt about it.

I'm planning on reading all of the Horizon Experiement books to see if they are good (I didn't really care for The Manchurian that much). Great insight into this great panel! Love how you break down Spike and Beachcomber's relationship as well as delve into Carly's arc. One thing I've been liking about the series is how, at least with the humans, Carly is the "action mover" of the series, whereas Spike is sort of on the sidelines (which is a bit of a different take than the previous series' where Spike and Carly are characters). One thing I liked about this panel as well was how subtly Daniel Warren Johnson tackles how grief impacts the two characters. Carly's father was straight-up murdered, whereas Spike's father was at least able to make a conscious choice, and that will obviously change how each character views their loss. Carly's dad was taken from her, whereas Spike's dad made a heroic sacrifice, and as a result, both are going to process their loss from different angles. One wanting to avenge such a painful loss, and one just trying to come to grips and accept his father's choice. Also, love Arcee's stoic warrior pose.

While I probably won't be reading any of these titles you've reviewed in this video, I really appreciate your candid thoughts on them, Carl. But because it's a periodical and I'm too lazy and not interested enough to "keep track" of it, it is highly unlikely that I will ever get to buy and read it. Not a boring week at all. Scarlett's big reveal was that the sword was energon. I guess it'll be more relevant when GI Joe 1 comes out. @@marcuswai The thing with that big reveal in Scarlett was that it wasn’t a surprise. From the start I was assuming that whatever they were after was somehow connected to Energon so it seemed fairly straightforward. Not bad per se, just also not very surprising. If they let it be what it is, there is something certainly interesting there.

Read Absolute Batman I really liked it, the violence I liked, not happy with some of the words being bleeped out, they didn't do it with Creature Commando's (which was great by the way) and that's not a Black Label either, but's almost the only negative. I'm glad we've Alfred back, even though it's a totally different Alfred, the last page irritates a bit, would of been happier with a different "villain", but all in all a great start! My copy of Terminator didn't turn up my comic supplier received damaged copies, so should get it next week. Mind you listening to your synopsis, I feel I've read the story before, so may cancel after #1. I tried Transformers and the other parts of the Energon Universe, I wanted to like them, but it just wasn't for me, I was in my late 20's when Transformers began so have no childhood memory of it, it was also the same year I sold my first comic collection, so I had a break from geekdom, so missed lots around that time! Thanks for the comment & kind words! The more I sat with Absolute Batman, the more I could appreciate what they are trying to do (or at least my understanding of what they are hoping to achieve). Terminator was fun, it set up a promising concept of having these various Terminators dispatched through time. I imagine there will be some sort of connective tissues to then tell a larger story but for an issue 1, it gave me what I was looking for (while also not completely straying from something someone might expect from a Terminator story). I do agree though, that I think my perspective is one that isn’t really represented. Primarily an art collector but still interested in seeing what is currently in shops.
