Excellent tips. I hadn't thought of the amount of body weight being used to get into cow face pose. I see how this is very much an assisted stretch that uses a lot of force, while your alternatives allow for a more active stretch. I will definitely look to incorporate the active stretches into my sequences including the times that cow face pose isn't the pose being worked toward. Thank you!

@@jenelleleatyoga thanks I can see how transferring weight to the hands will help with hopping to the back of the mat. Will this idea also work for jumping to the front of the mat? I have seen some yoga teachers jump to the front of the mat with a moment of suspension like a pike handstand before landing in forward fold. I would like to work towards that.

Great explanation and important video. I'm not a yoga teacher, nor do I feel I have trouble in hopping to the back of the mat, yet i often have the impression that a lot of yoga teachers are so sure in their practise that they forget, that people may have problems with certain things

Yes I agree, this is definitely a thing! It also goes the other way, many yoga teachers actually don't do this in their own practice and haven't taken it upon themselves to find a way to make it accessible to others who do want to try. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this ;)

WOW after about 10yrs of doing yoga, this is the first coherent take on it I've ever heard! THANK YOU for not being afraid to say what we all know deep down (although many pretend it's not) is absolutely true... wish I wasn't 4yrs late hah I stopped going to yoga classes awhile ago, just because I got sick of the spiritual fluff, noticing it actually distracted me and diminshed the practice. Also the people who teach yoga preach about humility, but have the most arrogant attitude of being 'spiritually superior' (see comments below). It's gross. Yoga may just be stretching and calisthenics and that's FINE! I love it. All the talk of chakras, chi, vibrations, meridians, etc. That is all bullshit. 100% without question. And Sanskrit?? wtf.. There is zero reason to believe that some ancient dead language has some 'magical frequency' built into it that corresponds to some vibration spiraling within our spirits, or whatevthefuk. I've been to chanting meditations where people 'sing' in a language they don't (and never will) understand. It's so pointless, it's painful. If you practice and sell qi gong, tai chi, acupuncture, reiki, or anything else that fits into the category of 'nothing diguised as something,' you are a charlatan and should be ashamed of yourself. Do something USEFUL. Thanks again for speaking Truth. I dream of a day when yoga can be taught by people who think.

This is exactly what I needed to know. But squeezing the thighs as though holding something between them and squeezing the butt is not seeming too natural at this stage. Maybe with practice??
@jenelleleatyoga
@jenelleleatyoga Жыл бұрын
Glad that this tip has resonated with you! It can feel a bit 'extra' or artificial when you start doing it but as you said it will feel a bit natural with practice. I like to think of the action of squeezing toothpaste out of the tube, you need to create a 'squeeze' on one end for the toothpaste to come out on the other and the squeeze between your thighs is the same. Once you create that inner thigh activation and/or slight internal rotation (both will work in varying degrees for different bodies) you will feel the lift in your chest and the upward/outward energy be transferred through the spine instead of just concentrated in one hinge point. 100% squeezing action isn't necessary but just the simple awareness of the drawing together energy between the thighs IS necessary to create a more functional and healthy spinal extension :)

Your interpretation of "origins of yoga" and "traditional yoga" is very limited and plainly put "wrong".....yoga is about developing humility, overcoming ego, developing unconditional love and compassion for humanity. Meditation is the goal here and yoga "postures" were practiced to be able to sit and meditate for hours together without discomfort, understanding the human body and organs and using them for spiritual pursuits rather than materialistic pursuits. Please read books which expand your understanding, read about yoga history and Indian history and british rule in depth and form your opinions, I actually had a good laugh when you talked about Indian people "rebranding" yoga because they wanted to stand out under the "British rule", white robes have a very scientific and spiritual meaning and context, they are not worn to "look" pure. Please for you own sanity and for being properly informed and to not come across as a superficial yoga practitioner, read and assimilate the right books and texts.

HAHA. tells someone they're just "wrong" then preaches about humility. How does the view of your stomach look with your head so far up your ass? Also, is yoga all about hypocrisy? If so, you're def doing it right

you need to understand the history and reason for yoga.
@jenelleleatyoga
@jenelleleatyoga 2 жыл бұрын
I think understanding the history of yoga definitely has a significant role. I view it as one of those things that matters if you care but it doesn't matter if you don't care. Whatever is important to you will take priority! It is common in the yoga industry to discount particular styles of yoga as they are considered as being out of alignment with the original intentions of yoga. However given that yoga has constantly evolved and shifted over time, it begs the question 'what EVEN is traditional yoga?' That's what I find interesting :)

Yes! Addressing meridians and organ health are very important aspects to a yoga practice. The nice thing with yoga is that you don't HAVE to know which organ is affected by what you are doing in order for your efforts to be fruitful. But having the knowledge is definitely empowering and really interesting to some people ;)

Yoga is also about breathing, useing your muscles dynamically and isometricly and it is about finding precision in your movements. Most of all and in between the lines yoga is about allignment and interdependent integration of bodily systems! If you do yoga consciously, scientifically and for yourself there comes a point where you can consciously massage organs in your body by streching your fascial inner anatomy and breathing them into certain directions. It's a question of precision and coordinating breathing movements, subtle movements in pivotal points like spine hips etc. etc. and also about broader movements. Classical streching is rather unprecise because it tends to be isolated. If your yoga practice is as unprecise and not fit to your body individually it might not benefit you more than classical stretching. But Isolated work on muscles like in classical stretching or strenghening etc. will not give you as many neuromuscular benefits and highten your ability to sublimate your movments as much. But. Yeah. Of course stretching is an important part of yoga but saying yoga is stretching and nothing more is simply wrong. And imo; Nothing speaks against adding new movements to yoga or combining it with other practices like animal movements or qi gong for example. As this video says; There is not one traditional kind of yoga - it never originated under one comittee or anything.

I know this video is old - but it’s exactly what I needed right now. I got back on the mat after a few years off during a very demanding job. After a few months of regular practice my flexibility has increased significantly. My balance is usually good. But I’ve been pushing myself to go deeper, but today my knees gave out & I almost fell over in warrior. It was a good reminder to slow down & reorient myself to hoe yoga isn’t about performance or perfection, but a practice.

The real purpose of yoga is to find the connection with the universal consciousness. Asanas is just a very small part of it. Traditionally yoga is a very spiritually evolved science. It’ is a path to salvation with many branches. It’s a lifetime study. Reading one book is not Gen a drop in the ocean of yoga. Practice asanas. Practice Pranayam and begin with the yamas and niyamas. The practice in the west is essentially stretches and exercises. Even if you feel one is essentially just sitting there is a lot happening within. Yoga is the science of connectivity with the inner self with the universal consciousness.
@jenelleleatyoga
@jenelleleatyoga 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on all of this! Thanks for your comment. I do think that we have discounted the value of the physical practice in regards to how it can draw us deeper into all of those spiritual aspects you mentioned. As a modern society we have become so unhealthy in our physical bodies that we need something like yoga asana to help us prepare ourselves for the deeper aspects of yoga just as you mentioned.
@baterickpatman
@baterickpatman Жыл бұрын
"spiritually evolved" ... this phrase means nothing ...this is why I don't go to yoga classes much. I just do it on my own. People who are so into the "spiritual side" and the chakras and the blahblah bullshit have their heads SO FAR up their asses that they have lost the ability to reason at all. The depressing part is, you probably tell people in your class this garbage, and since you're wearing beads and have a statue of buddha, they believe you. They actually convince themselves that this nonsense carries meaning. This type of behavior devolves the human race.

Yoga is means union to the highest self. Traditional yoga is a way to open energy channels and psychic centers and awaken kundalini shakti. And its purpose is definitely not achieving that 'oh so sexy body. It's not necessarily any form of exercise and definitely not something that can be valued in a market. Doing some poses to show your flexibility in that bikini-clad body is not yoga. Stop calling everything Yoga.
@jenelleleatyoga
@jenelleleatyoga 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that everything is called 'yoga' these days. It definitely has taken a commercial turn to become popular with the masses. The point I am trying to make is the judgement that comes with one's practice being better or more traditional than someone else's only serves to make someone feel more superior than another and at the end of the day, yoga is what you make of it. It is constantly evolving and changing so I don't think that just one way of doing it is the answer. Thanks for chiming in on this topic ;)

Thanks for your comment Chris. Sorry for the late reply! I agree that everything is now yoga! It's a bandwagon that everyone and their baby goat has hopped onto! Hi Janel ! I love your curiosity and the way you are open to discussion and other opinions. I haven't read the book you mentioned but I read about William Jay Broad a little and he is a journalist. @jenelleleatyoga
@jenelleleatyoga 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment Jahnvi! You could definitely say that it would be more beneficial to learn from someone who is in the field, as they do have experience, like you said! However there is some value to a more objective approach which isn't influenced by one's own personal experience. I think that there's an interesting aspect to what he is pointing out, which is basically that science and research needs to catch up with the anecdotal evidence of what a yoga practice can really do for someone. That is actually how he ends the book; by stating that there is plenty of valid experiences had by people who can back up these claims that many yoga teachers preach, however if things want to be taken seriously and to the next level with more substantial proof of yoga's benefits, then there needs to be supporting research done. I can definitely see both sides to that opinion! However what resonated with me more than anything was how this opinionated, dogmatic approach that many yoga teachers and styles have towards those who aren't considered 'traditional', is actually not really founded on anything real other than criticism and self-righteousness! Because, yoga is constantly changing to suit the people and the times and it has been for many, many years! Such an interesting convo to have ;)
