What construction/material is this one? Need to replace our main and jib on our Looping 48.

This is probably a dumb question but ....I'm assuming creating 2 molds, glassing around them, then inserting and glueing it in makes better strength/continuity than wrapping glass over the edge of the hole and tabbing onto the bulkhead.. but I am wondering why? Thanks for any info if you have time. Love the boat and the channel :0)
@youngbarnaclesКүн бұрын
There are a number of ways to close out a penetration. The approach shown in this video is good for small holes. The approach you are talking about I would use for larger jobs like the doors/doorframe through the bulkhead

You covered the plugs with some kind of release film right? Was this baking-paper of some kind? How much draft did you have on the plug? 5 degrees should work fine?
@youngbarnaclesКүн бұрын
Those plugs had 2°draft but it can have between 1° to 3 °depending on the quality of the tool. The brown release film details are covered in our video vacuum bagging polyester parts. About 2 videos earlier

Could you accomplish acceptable reinforcement with fiberglass sheets like g10? Cut a hole, epoxy in g10, and then drill your cable hole in the middle of the g10.
@youngbarnaclesКүн бұрын
No, as there will still be a discontinuity in the fibres. Our previous video on the correct way to cut a hole through a bulkhead covers more on this discussion
@svsaguaroКүн бұрын
@youngbarnacles ok I'll watch! I should have mentioned (and maybe this solves glass continuity) that it would be g10 plus some glass on each side of the bulkhead. So the g10 acts as the sandwich. Cheers! And nice video!

@youngbarnacles appreciate all the videos you guys make. I've been glassing in all my bulkheads on my lagoon 440. Many areas had no tabbing at all when I started. Had lots of local talks among other cat owners who have done bulkhead work and everyone agrees you probably have the most professional approach to glassing/carbon on KZbin! I haven't extended my scoops yet, but definitely need to circle back to the videos where you guys did it!

Firstly, thanks for sharing. Great content, explained well, good to hear the boys chiming in. Won’t mention Lagoon, oh, just did! 😂 They are clearly a volume built, & built for max volume. I was shocked to see just how they did it, and how under engineered they are, in my opinion. Of course the bulkheads are hidden, so, no one will ever know……for a while at least. 😂🇦🇺

One of the big problems with the lagoon bulkheads was that they didn't even seal the plywood after cutting huge holes.

Yes that also another problem

Well new yes, the old Lavezzi,Belize and Bahia sail well too, the cheap performance oriented cat. Lavezzi 6.2t lightship for 40ft and Bahia 46ft with 9.5t for 46ft is on par with today's performance cats from weight and sail area is quite comparable too. Put hydrant from Calvert onto this old FP and they sail even very well. The FP standard dacron sails and their cut sucks big time.
@chrisr8198 күн бұрын
Yes I massivly re-enforced my Lavezzi too, all bulkheads cut properly epoxy glassed in and re-enforced plus a helper bulkhead additional to spread loads and through hulls in bulkheads done the same then Shane does here. All the stringers are also completely glassed in too.
@andersonautomotive8 күн бұрын
@chrisr819 I've done a lot of reinforcement on my Salina as well, but it still needs more. I still have the factory sails, which were unused for much of the boat's life. But I can definitely see a big benefit in better cut sails. I also extended my keels 15 inches to fix the poor shape (same as your keels) and replaced the rudders (same as your rudders) with outremer 51 rudder blades. The keel and rudder mods greatly improved my tack angles over ground.

Very cool, good work and great explanations as usual! I noticed that you aren’t sweeping the foam with thickened resin before your laminating? Nor did you mention how much resin you add to compensate for what’s going into the pores of the foam. I sometimes get lazy and don’t do it as well but the pieces I sweep first end up using less resin and so being liter. Always figured the thickened resin is stronger than the foam so no structural detriment? Also surprised you didn’t do filets to avoid those 90deg corners in the T? I’m sure however that same as the thickened resin sweep I recon you have a good reason for skipping it and looking forward to learning something new 😜
@youngbarnacles15 күн бұрын
Next video covers a bit of the core bond that you are questioning. I did use microspheres in the resin for the bunk end. I didn't fillet the corners as I needed the geometry to be a sharp corner.

Thanks for the education, muchos gracias. Why didn't I think of pulling a thread. I'm assuming the vacuum reduction for poly ester due to VOCs doesn't apply to vinyl ester resin, is that correct? Thanks again
@youngbarnacles15 күн бұрын
Vinylester still has the same problem. It will depend on what resin you get as this does change a bit

Great technical stuff mate, totally agree with the vacuum reduction with the VOCs, good technique. Ross
@4everB216 күн бұрын
@@LifeOnTheHulls I'm not an expert, but if you look at the documentation of Airex core material they suggest a pretty low vacuum anyway (0,2 to 0,3 if I recall correctly, even with epoxy). I've been using 0.3 recently and results seem to be fine.

3 mill USD, that's quite a pile of scratch, she is AWFUL PERDY though. I love a cat who's bows are so light. Gonna need some more subs though. Me, I love your channel, more peeps need to watch it.

It is a fair bit of scratch! Way out of our budget thats for sure. Guessing having a real job and not being a full time content creator doesn't work in favour of the KZbin algorithm. It's a shame though. There is so much rubbish from "experts" there needs to be some useful content for those of us who want to learn. Ah well we enjoy making the videos so it's all good. Glad you enjoy the content too.
