I ran a group in a treatment center here in Chicago centered around a song by A Perfect Circle. Most of the clients were not fans of any music with guitars let alone heavy music. The song stirred up a major breakthrough for a couple people. Rollins Band helped me tremendously. I couldn’t stay sober with just heavy music BUT having access to various genres of metal & writing music as well, has provided moments of ‘catharsis’ & courage to face my own self induced Hell / trauma. Trauma stores in the body at the cellular level & between clinical therapy, recovery program & the music, I was able to move the trauma out of the cells of the body up into my consciousness where it could be faced, resolved & eradicated. Permanently. I had an experience in the studio recently during a particularly intense screaming vocal passage & I ‘fell out’ in the vocal booth & was in tears. I saw two major traumas flash before my eyes & they haven’t returned since. I appreciate your guest saying, “It needs to be helpful.” The music can be therapeutic but depending on the person, certain songs can do the opposite & re traumatize someone. I.E. Might not be a good idea to play ‘Daddy’ by Korn to a survivor of child sex abuse. Not trying to be funny. It’s serious business. There’s a fine line between help & harm that’s why it’s so critically important that clinicians are properly trained & licensed.

This is absolutely fascinating. I have no idea how to go about finding this therapy in Indiana, but I’d be super interested in pursuing this therapy. Music is the only thing that makes me feel okay with me at my core as a man. This gave me a ton of food for thought. It answered a ton of questions and raised a hundred more. As soon as my wife gets to stop making Jackson Pollack paintings in our toilet, I’m going to show her this. This is PERFECT for me. Hope she gets well soon!

I will be honest I am more into punk than stoner and not sure if its the case in the US but here in the UK you have a few stoner bands who have an audience who very much not just your stoner rock "crowd" Orange goblin for instance because of their heavy motorhead influence have a big punk rock following at their shows, same with uncle acid and the deadbeats due to the big detroit garage rock influences on their sound, as with my previous comment I'm just trying to rationalise where finn could be coming from.
@cleanandsoberstoner114 күн бұрын
Thanks for listening to Finn on that point. Personally, I'm very un punk. I might actually do a video on why I am for the most part anti-punk. But that's just me, and most of the people I know in the scene here in the states are into punk, in one form or another. The two scenes are actually very similar in a lot of ways. Excellent point! Hope you come back for more of our stuff.🤘🏻

It's very ironic for a guy whose identity is so wrapped up in punk rock to call any other genre boring. The vast majority of punk is sloppy and samey. There are only a few bands (of any real nototriety) like Dead Kennedys, Fear, and Misfits that actually made interesting music occasionally.

I played in two doom/stoner bands in the early 00's, and I quit because I got heart sick of playing with bands that just re-hashed Sabbath riffs and invoked that era as a substitute for thought, care or originality in thier music. There were some great bands, like Dark Castle, Worship, Mournful Congregation, Hierophant etc, but for every one that was pushing the sonic envelope, there was a St. Vitus clone, cranking out the ooooh yeah yeahs! in thier charity shop flares. I still dip into the scene from time to time, but not much has changed since I walked away from it.
@cleanandsoberstoner117 күн бұрын
Thanks for dropping in! Personally, I think the scene has developed way beyond the St Vitus clones...

@@cleanandsoberstoner1 it has, to a degree, but that sabbath/vitus worship still lingers.

Bloody Hell you really glazed him up in that intro. Props for being completely open about your fanboy status though. Not a fan of Finn, don't find him that influential at all in the heavy music scene, and certainly not a fan of Ronnie Radke, so I'll I'll agree that this video is probably not for me.

@cleanandsoberstoner1 haha I think maybe so. I'm not familiar with your channel or vibe, I was just curious what McKenty had to say about this genre that I love that necessitated a response. A couple of minutes in and I realized I don't want to know what he said. I don't want to spend any more time listening to that guy. I'd rather put on some music. New Slomosa playing right now. Cheers.

If someone said this in any of the previous comments that i haven't read, i apologize. But, to elaborate on what you said about bands or band members not being stoners, but still make the music and are passionate about it. Bongripper are a sober band, and i love them. I was lucky to have found a vinyl copy of "Miserable" at McKay's a couple months ago. So, yeah. You don't have to be a stoner to enjoy the culture. I really liked this video, Scott. Finn can keep his opinions to himself when it comes to our music of choice. I listened to Lowrider's Refractions earlier today at work. Love them and super stoked for the Elephant Tree split. Ok, I'm stoned and rambling. Have an amazing weekend, everyone 🔥🤘

Anyone who thinks that there's not enough craftsmanship, dynamics, variation and melodies in stoner metal should listen to the last few Elder albums, it's not true that they're just "recycled Sabbath riffs", not that it's true for all the other stoner metal bands either, but it's especially not true for Elder. I like Finn Mckenty's meta-commentary sometimes, but every time he talks about my favorite metal genres like prog metal or death metal he shows a lot of ignorance.
@cleanandsoberstoner117 күн бұрын
Well put! I try not to overuse Elder, but I think I need to lean into them more. My favorite band of the past 13 years or so!

I remember watching some of his videos then I stopped watching him after the pattern of his videos became apparent; Punk is high and mighty but metal is shit and metalheads are stupid. I love punk Rock but as a metalhead first I really didn't need to take his shit.
@romanabereneth568317 күн бұрын
He has to read the def off wikipedia, why does anyone who cares about this genre care about his opinion other than to jovially chuckle at this guy? But hey, I have no idea what I'm talking about ever. I bet this cat can't name three songs. nyucknyucknyuck So cute, his opinions are so cute. It's kind of precious. By the way, the years of 1967-1972 ARE HUGE those years were wild, you look at the time line and you're going beatles, hendrix, zeppelin, sabbath, omg the timeline matters so so so much. (Also, suck it, Rings of Power.)

I like Finn and how cohesive and direct he can be on various topics but I feel that sometimes his opinions only makes sense for him self, and that's ok, but when you have a large audience, you should pick the subject matter that you have at least some level of knowledge to speak about. There are so many great stoner bands and even more amazing bands that has stoner influences in their sound... Komatsu (Netherlands), Earthless and Red Fang (USA), Kadavar (Germany) are some of the ones that I saw live in recent years here in Brazil and they are all great and different from each other! Actually I also saw Eye Hate God live, but I prefer doom over sludge. Loved to find your channel, keep it up. Cheers!
