Do they just cut the towing cable at the towboat end?
@delawarednrec Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question! Actually, the line was a loop from the towboat through two holes in the bow of the Texas Star and back to the towboat. Once the Texas Star went down, they released one end from the towboat and retrieved the line by pulling it through the holes on the bow of the Star.

Great job, love all the structure that is making it's way out there. I am guessing the contractors and such don't really want other vessels in the area. But it's sort of a shame that these are not publicly announced beforehand. I would have enjoyed making the run out to observe these deployments.

I'm no marine biologist but this seems like a very simple and cost-effective way to provide new habitat for all sorts of marine life. Are there any downsides, except the lost scrap value of the ship?

Creating artificial reefs is a great way to sustain fisheries and recreational fishing opportunities. These habitats are created with durable, stable, non-toxic reef materials that can develop rich invertebrate communities. Learn more at de.gov/artificialreefs.

We've been doing up here in Connecticut for a few years. While it sucks forgetting to bring bags, most stores sell reusable ones for very cheap. This should be nation wide. World wide really.

My biggest problem with these artificial reefs is the waste of good ready made steel and iron that could easily be recycled.
@scotte28153 жыл бұрын
Actually, upright is more interesting to the fish, sort of. An upright ship provides more vertical height and there is more light on the wreck the closer it is to the surface.

Been an awesome thing. Only issue was you can't get a boat past Port Mahon except at high tide a friend of mine who has a boat told me. He said it was dredged fine until he got to the bay

Delaware will be underwater by 2050. Nothing any of us can do will change that fact. Your climate action plan should be solely focused on evacuating and relocating the state's entire population within the next 30 years.

REEDVILLE is a Fishing vessel built in 1944 by WHEELER SHIPBUILDING - WHITESTONE NY, U.S.A.. Was sailing under the flag of United States (USA). Formerly also known as RANGE RECOVERER, AG 161, FS 278, E 42 1834. It's gross tonnage is 542 tons. Originally a Navy ship then an Army FS (freight and supply)-class vessel, the Reedville in its commercial incarnation was renamed for the hub of the menhaden industry, Reedville, Va. - itself named after Capt. Elijah W. Reed, whose process for extracting fish oil from menhaden in the 19th century enriched him and earned Reedville (population: 500) the label of the wealthiest town in America.

You should include a bit more of her heritage. She was more than a WW II and Korean War-era ship. She had a working life well beyond those two conflicts.

The NVF site is a part of the new Auburn Valley State Park. You can visit and look at the exterior of the remaining buildings, but please don't try to enter them. Parts of the site are active construction areas, please avoid them as well.

OK I have a question, probably a silly one… I was wondering if anybody knows exactly how they caused it to sink. I saw at one point look like a torch or something at the bottom on the Portside I believe. Does anybody know exactly how they sink a ship like this just curious I love the ship
@delawarednrec5 жыл бұрын
Torches are used to cut openings in specific locations both above and below the waterline.

What is the name of the herbicide?
@delawarednrec6 жыл бұрын
Mike, the herbicides used are glyphosate based, EPA registered and applied according to EPA label instructions.
@tsuga19875 жыл бұрын
@@delawarednrec Glyphosate is the active chemical in Roundup etc. What really matters is the % of glyphosate in the chemical you use. Your chemical must be aquatic approved for most phragmites situations due to water. If your feet are wet you must use an aquatic approved chemical. Burning does not do anything to Phrag, but it removes dead stems and duff to allow another treatment.

Are the ships going to hurt the environment? With the paint or metals? Why are we doing this in the first place? How about the brandywine ?
@delawarednrec6 жыл бұрын
Jesus, the ships are cleaned up and inspected by the EPA before we are permitted to sinks them. As for why we do it, it provides habitat for sea life and recreation for our citizens, as is explained in the video. Not sure about your question on the Brandywine; could you be a little more specific? What would you like to know?
