Candace, you're quite right. As a seasoned Shakespearean, sometimes I don't always know what I'm talking about, but it's worth researching. I'll give you an example and try not to ramble on too long. One line I've had to speak as Mark Antony used to bother me slightly. In his last speech, eulogizing Brutus he says 'His life was gentle'. Well, as I've read somewhere, 'gentle' people don't go around poking knives into people. It has only recently occurred to me that in Shakespeare's day, gentle meant 'noble'. Proper context indeed.

This was really helpful, so thank you. I have an audition coming up and I'm trying to decide on a Shakespeare monologue to perform as his works are what I'm most interested in.

Hi, Candace. You probably don't remember me, but you and I were in a show many years ago when you were just a child. It was Alamogordo Music Theatre's 2001 production of "The Secret Garden." You were Mary, and I was your (ghostly) deceased father. Anyway... I will soon be doing my first Shakespeare production at NMSU in Las Cruces, so I thought I'd check the Internet to see if I could pick up a few tips. Imagine my surprise when I saw your video! Thanks for the great tips! Please know that I admire you greatly for pursuing your dream of acting. I remember you being a very talented young lady, but it takes great courage to enter the field of acting! Here's to you for accepting that challenge, and I am glad to see that you are doing well.

I can’t act at all, but I really love to sing. I always get good roles in school musicals and I got the lead this year, but for the spring play, I never get good roles because I am really bad. I want it so bad even though I know I can’t get it.

Hi! I’m going to be auditioning for the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and the criteria is two contrasting contemporary one minute monologues. I need help. My one monologue is from Roxie Hart from Chicago (the 2002 movie version) and I don’t want to do another musical or play but I’m having trouble finding some powerful serious deep amazing monologues from movies. Thoughts?

What's your opinion on pieces that "overdone"? I've been doing research for days, and every time I find a piece I really do connect with I also find that it's on a list or something on the internet that says it should be avoided. I'm an international student so there aren't a lot of people I have turn to for advice especially since I'm auditioning for musical theatre programs in the US and Canada; the internet is my biggest resource. Would you have any recommendations for contemporary female monologues in the age range 21+? I like characters that sort of wear their heart on their sleeves; women that aren't afraid to express their emotion- especially pain- and know how to use their femininity. Women who just want to be loved but aren't always sure how. T hemes dealing with unrequited love, feeling misunderstood, comedic self-deprecation etc. One of my all-time favorite characters is Fanny Bryce from the musical Funny Girl if that helps. Thanks! :)

Hi Candace, I am considering auditioning for a midsummer program at a drama institution. How much experience should an actor have before they audition? I have been taking acting classes and have done some improv, but have not done much theatre. I just want to know what is the usual standard for someone to be considered?

Hi Candace, I am applying for Drama school and so far for my classical speeches I have looked at Lady Anne Act 1 Scene 2 and Phoebe As you like it do you think these are contrasting enough? I am really struggling to find a contemporary so any advice on where to find something would be helpful as I really want something authentic so would prefer to buy the play, thank you in advance from the U.K

Hi , I m 15 . Almost 16. Basically , I m a actor. I do this where I make myself suitable to the character. Play with emotion. Touch people hearts. Know the person feeling. And that's the best way to win the spectators hearts.

hi Candace Thankyou for the great video it was so informative! I have an audition for a prestigious London drama school in about a month and they require a contemporary and classical monologue for the the audition. I have already chosen my contemporary one which is nina from the seagull, which is a very sad monologue, and am now deciding between two classic monologues, one of which I feel more comfortable with but is very similar to my contemporary, and the other which I feel less confident with, but is more contrasting. which would you suggest I do? Thankyou again for the video and for taking time to read my comment! I really appreciate the help you're giving to the people that comment on your video :)
