Dan, can you share how you produced your PCT videos.
@CaptainDansWanderings Жыл бұрын
I can't remember the name of the app, but it cost me about $40 a year to use. The problem is that I had/have an Android phone, and there weren't any quality video editors back then. Whichever one it was I used was the only real choice. On the other hand, Apple phones had a bunch of good apps to choose from. Producing 10-20 minute videos for each day on the trail was sometimes a labor of love and sometimes a pain in the ass. I spent hours doing it in 2015. In 2016 I did all the editing when I got home.

Hi Dan, on that last bit of the pass video work got a bit choppy due to you needing to be safe. Can you expand on what you were dealing with right there? How physically challenging was that last bit?? How sketchy? Thanks
@CaptainDansWanderings Жыл бұрын
It was a dangerous section because it was steep and icy, and there's no trail at the top as I was trying to make my way up and over the snow cornice. Getting thru the snow chute was unnerving as well. Normally, I don't even think to videotape what I'm doing when it gets like this because I forget, but this time I remembered to hit the record button and stuck my phone in my pocket as crawled on my hands and knees to get to the top. Thankfully, Ass Patch and Vicki waited for me at the top, and he guided me thru the safest route. If I'd owned a good GoPro (I only had a GoPro 2 at the time) and attached it to my chest or on top of my head, the footage would have been better. Basically, I was scared and worried about falling to my death, so I didn't get any good footage.
@washingtonmike8296 Жыл бұрын
@@CaptainDansWanderings At that point I was worried for you. The intensity of the moment was evident to me. Do you ever reflect on what you would have done if those other hikers weren’t there? I do limited section hiking in Washington and Oregon and traversing a snow bank with only a 20ft. drop potential is a chest thumper for me. I never saw an ice axe. Thoughts on that? I appreciate all your PCT videos. I watch them regularly. Happy New Year. Hikes in ‘23?
@CaptainDansWanderings Жыл бұрын
@@washingtonmike8296 I bought an ice axe but didn't take it, probably would have given me peace of mind a couple times if I had. I likely would have continued over Forrester Pass on my own but it would have been more difficult. I had similar issues getting around Mt Thielsen but was fortunate to have Kathryn and Conrad with me that day. No hikes planned for 2023. You?

@@CaptainDansWanderings - I hope to put another piece of the PCT in my “connect the dots” technique of hiking. In Washington I would continue from Forest Road 23 through Goat Rocks to Stevens Pass. 🫰🏼🤞🤞🤞The chances of that are quite small though. Scheduling and responsibilities at home are very important too. I may have to stay local with day hikes and re-watch some of my favorite hiking videos. Which rates a 7++ on the “fun meter”. But I will always keep the Pacific Coast Trail close to my heart and dream.

I followed your PCT hikes in '15 & '16 and your UK hikes. Just checking in to see what you've been doing since. Glad to see you settled into a house, NM is an "enchanting" state. Your PCT videos were pioneering in some ways, not many hikers were doing them back then. Your videos were also an inspiration to my wife and I to get involved being trail angels. We now do some trail magic every year in Oregon and Northern CA. Sorry we never got to met you on the trail. Have you considered doing the CDT? You must be fairly close to the southern terminus. Anyway, good luck with future adventures.

Hello Jack. It's good to hear from ya. Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed my PCT videos. I watch them now and then, just to kinda relive those moments. I have considered the CDT, the southern terminus is just the next county over. I don't have any plans to hike it, but I'd like to think I could some day. It's too bad I didn't get to meet you and the missus when I passed thru your area. I appreciate you being trail angels for the hikers. I did some impromptu trail angel-ing while I was camping in my pickup and I enjoyed meeting the hikers. Thanks for dropping by, y'all take care of yourselves.

Hi Dan. Watching your PCT videos yet again. I was wondering about the RIBZ pack you were using. Did they interfere with your backpack straps? How did you like them?? I don’t see other hikers using them but it seems like it could distribute weight more evenly (front and back). Thanks - Mike
@CaptainDansWanderings2 жыл бұрын
The straps didn't interfere with each other. I suppose there was a little better weight distribution with some of the weight transferred to the front, but the main benefit was that all the things I needed to have quick access to were now conveniently in front of me and not stuck in my backpack. Water, snacks, camera stuff, etc. It made a big difference for me because as a solo hiker I couldn't turn to my partner and say "Could you get this out of the back of my pack for me?"
@washingtonmike82962 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainDansWanderings Thanks for the reply. Most of my hiking is solo and your right, it can be a hassle to “off load” the pack for little things only to slap it back on again.
