What surprised me when I listened to the performance was that I felt dramatic dynamic without exaggerating technique, and the notes throughout the performance sound like they're singing. It's hard to expect any Chopin Competition winner to play like this, past and future.

Chopin himself was accused of underplaying the emotion of his pieces. His response: “I indicate” suggested that Chopin was not out to bludgeon listeners (like Liszt) or seduce them (like John Field and others), rather to meet music lovers halfway and invite them to join him in creation. It’s a humane way of playing and ABM, so often accused of being aloof, gave of himself not just in performance but also in the magnificent way he served pupils. Thanks so much for sharing this!

A parte l'esecuzione, semplicemente fuori scala... Quel che rende unica ogni registrazione è l'eleganza e la sobrietà, contrapposte alle esecuzioni così "teatrali" che si vedono. Sembra che la sua intenzione sia dire: "io non esisto, ecco a voi cos'è il pianoforte, ecco a voi cos'è Chopin". 90k visualizzazioni, non 3 milioni. Ma va bene così. Grazie di cuore

This is a wonderful documentary and I have watched it several times. However, it is painfully missing Martha Argerich, Tatiana Nikolayevna, Rosalyn Tureck, Angela Hewitt, Maria Yudina, Clara Schumann, Maria Tipo, Alicia de Laroccha, Nina Simone, and many, many other great female pianists. And why the brief clip at the closing of the film of (I think?) Maria Joāo Pires performing with no proper credit? And Myra Hess was a great piano artist but why only one woman highlighted? This is a shame. :(

Michelangeli, per gli amici ABM, è stato sicuramente il genio pianistico del ‘900, direi inarrivabile nonostante gli interpreti eccezionali del secolo scorso. Il nuovo Listz… senza dubbio.

Purtroppo questi grandi artisti finiranno e ci resteranno pochi eredi. Il resto solo tecnica e niente cuore se non qualche smorfia che non ha nulla a che fare con la musica.
