Came back to this section after seeing part 2 published, for what it's worth at 3:36 the irish trad pattern for triple meter is typically DUD DUD etc., which you can see Andy and Paul doing pretty clearly during the intro in videos. I find it helps doing it that way to have a good consistent down stroke at the beginning of each triplet, it helps drive the rhythm.

I had the great privilege of meeting Dick in the late 90s in Colchester, Essex. I'd normally not approach an artist in the interval of a gig, but he was standing alone at the bar and I really wanted him to play Now Westlin' Winds in the second half. He was as charming as I hoped and promised to play it, although I suspect he was going to anyway. As an Ayrshire man, I've always loved Robert Burns's poems and songs and no one plays and sings them better than Dick Gaughan.

Oh, thank you so much for doing this, Daniel! What's out there on YT isn't good enough to learn from and do justice to the original on Jack Orion -- and voila! There was one accurate run through on YT up until a couple of years ago, but it disappeared before I could finish tabbing it out and learning it. I'm a late bloomin' journeyman focusing on American Primitive now, but I always wanted to add this sublime composition to the mix -- it's not one of those I can do from ear.

John Hartford was America's poet. "Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines And the junkyards and the highways come between us And some other woman's cryin' to her mother 'Cause she turned and I was gone I still might run in silence; tears of joy might stain my face And the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind But not to where I cannot see You walkin' on the backroads By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind I dip my cup of soup back from a gurglin' Cracklin' caldron in some train yard My beard a roughening coal pile, and a dirty hat pulled low across my face Through cupped hands 'round the tin can I pretend to hold you to my breast and find That you're waiting from the backroads By the rivers of my memories Ever smilin', ever gentle on my mind" Thanks for the J.H. tune. @ super interesting timing! It took me a while to understand it but its why I like it so much Do I count it the same as you (4 bars 4/4 and then an extra bar of 2/4 - two extra beats) I sorta count the backstep in double time and leave a rest which makes it feels like a random triplet “…4,2,3,4(1+2+3__)back to 1,2,3,4..” is that same as you? Thanks a lot for this tutorial! This is going to be challenging to get up to speed and sing at the same time. I am a newbie to fingerstyle( Started about a year ago after a 30 year hiatus from guitar) . Any tips for exercises that will help get the fingers moving faster ? It has taken me a couple of months to get Deep river blues(TE Version) close to temp , but not able to sing at the same time yet. Docs guitar is another tune that seems to have maxed out my finger picking abilities before reaching the songs desired tempo. I think I know the answer but hoping for a short cut. lol

Well done mate; thanks for one of my favourite songs that I associate with Ireland because of the kind of humour and the little mischievous smile that Paul Brady shows while singing this song in his famous YT video about this undoubtedly serious subject from Ireland's past. He is, without envy, a brilliant guitarist and after a long search I finally found in your video an excellent explanation of the playing technique he uses here.

@@danielsherrill You're probably on your way to becoming one too (without any inappropriate flattery)... I've watched one or two of your videos, your skills are not too far removed from those of our honoured heroes. I was also struck by John Hartford's ‘Gentle on my mind’, which in my generation was largely influenced by Glen Campbell as it was played on European radio stations in the seventies. It took me some time to learn its origins. Even at 66, I'm still not too familiar with open tunings, so I play my simple version in standard tuning in C and kind of go through this very narrative song. I guess that's what attracts most people of our kind - that mix of being clever and inventive with the instrument, especially with fingerstyle, and on top of that composing a story creatively. So thanks again, your channel will enrich my musical treasure trove. Couldn't find out where you're from, but wherever you live: greetings from the Elbe coast region in the north of Germany. Have fun!

@@danielsherrill ... then you'll have to hurry, Lübeck is actually still a beautiful city, once the main centre of trade in the powerful trading association of the so-called ‘Hanseatic League’ ("Hanse") for the states around the Baltic Sea, something like the East India Company for Great Britain and its dependent colonies. Today, it is mainly known for a particularly high-quality sweet treat, the ‘Original Lübeck Marzipan’. However, since our government has reached an agreement with the outgoing American government on further conflicts against the Russian war party in the Ukraine-Russia war, and more and more war rhetoric is being spread among the people in government circles here, as well as in neighbouring European countries, we as a population are increasingly concerned about how our voices are being disregarded in opposition to a Europe-wide conflict. However, the entire Baltic Sea coast is now within close range of Russian weapons of attack and, as you know, someone who plays with fire occasionally burns their fingers in a very unpleasant way. And what was done with Ukrainian cities can also be done with the coastal cities of the Baltic Sea and the regions where anti-aircraft defences are stationed, if extended by aggressive false-flag operations or supposed ‘shooting back’, as Hitler said in the first hours of the Second World War commenting the actions vs. Poland at Danzig. A few minutes flight distance from Russia. In this worst-case scenario, my home village will also be affected, around 70 km from Lübeck ...
