Did you consider cutting your pages so they would be recessed about 1/8" top & bottom?

I have. Even when I did this one, I tried to be generous when I cut the pages so they wouldn’t stick out of the bottom.

One question: this type of 'binding does not expand - correct? So, if I glue photos/ephemera onto a page first, could I not build the 'journal' from front to back, one page at a time? Have you tried this?

You are right, the spine doesn’t expand, since each piece is glued to each other. You could definitely build it from front to back after adding to your pages, but I haven’t done this myself. I like to have the journal empty and then fill it later.
