I'm 88 years young. I first rode the Ghan to Alice Springs in 1950. Steam power, entertainers as passengers and 62 hours to our destination. BUT... unforgettable trip. No rail ties then either. Rail laid in groves cut in hard pan.

When I visited Hakone, the train line only made it to Hakone Yumoto Station, as the line ahead was damaged by typhoons earlier in the year. Instead, we took a harrowing bus ride up the winding hilly roads, it was still a great trip but I was a bit disappointed I didn't get to take the train all the way up the Hakone Tozan line.

great video. i have always found the location of adelaide interstate terminal hard to fathom. very difficult to get into the city. no footpath on that road to and from the terminal. i hope it can be improved one day.
@FromtheWindowSeat7 күн бұрын
Thank you! Yes, dating from the early 80s, it’s really designed with cars in mind (sadly). Adelaide Railway Station in the city is now surrounded by other buildings and enclosed so it’s unlikely they will ever be able to accommodate long interstate trains as there’s not the space (again, sadly).
@Roadrunnerz456 күн бұрын
Is the reason taxis are hard to find is because they don't want the short fare as most passengers will be going into the city? @@FromtheWindowSeat
@FromtheWindowSeat6 күн бұрын
@@Roadrunnerz45 I’m not sure to be honest but I think that would be a factor. Also, if they go to the airport, there are flights constantly arriving, whereas with the train station, it’s very intermittent and depending on the number of passengers, they might not get a fare.

The background music (sounds like someone hammering a fence-post into the ground) is really annoying, and it even continues when the narrator is speaking. The ultra-wide-angle lens used to show the passing scenery is very disorienting since it makes everything seem curved. What could have been an interesting travelogue was ruined by the aforementioned. I did not subscribe and won't be watching any more of your videos.
@FromtheWindowSeat7 күн бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. You’ll be pleased to know that I no longer use a wide angle lens anc feedback suggests the music on my newer videos is much more agreeable to most people.

kind of laughing at how Australia cant have a single gauge, to this day still many gauge not standardized..I did work there on the Sydney transport system, and none of the jurisdictions could agree on a single tariff schedule, what a nightmare...great video and history...and your rail system is like here in the US delay delay delay!

everyone's always hyping up the trans-siberian, but honestly, the ghan feels way more exotic to me. can't figure out why it's not as famous. i mean, it literally crosses an entire continent and lets you see the vast deserts that define australia. imagine how stunning the stars must look at night in that isolated, dry part of the world. traveling from one end of a continent to the other through such a unique landscape sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. i know australia doesn't need tourists or money like that, but if i were aussie, i'd definitely push for better promotion of the ghan

Yes, fair points. That said, it does sell very well and is regularly sold out months in advance so I guess there’s limited value in promoting it too widely. 🤔
