I think Conan’s point is that this guy didn’t need to have a name (probably didn’t have a name in the original script) and it was a weird bit of unnecessary improv that he had to do.

Conan O'Brien is so self-deprecating that he can't even take credit for coming up with his own 5-second-character's name. 😄

They're horrible! They're now trying to bully their way into my moms house for a house call. They won't take no for an answer. They held her pain meds up for over two weeks and then only covered her for 7 days, just a fraction of what her prescription From her doctor was. If they come to her door unannounced when I'm there, they'll wish they hadn't!

wait, the only real difference was the number of cockroaches coming from the hat. everything else about the cockroaches in his suit and Dave flipping out was backstage, cause the "kick" when Teller lifted it was there. They probably did fall on Dave which was probably why he stood up. Dave had a phobia of them so Dave probably was pissed backstage. that just means in their minds watching it live, it was grosser than on TV. If Dave had a phobia, it was probably 10x worse for Dave in person. Aside from the cockroaches looking fewer than described and some holes in memory, the overall story doesn't actually get disproven by the recording that was broadcasted.
@lonelyone2 жыл бұрын
Having seen the footage, it doesn't seem like thousands of cockroaches and it doesn't seem like any got on Dave. I'm kind of disappointed at how prepped this bit was, and how Letterman was obviously expecting something after asking for them to "go hard."
@johnspence81413 жыл бұрын
Interesting recall. I watched the original airing. As you can see from the clip he wasn’t “tearing them a new asshole” he was pretty much playing the role. And there wasn’t a huge jump of cockroaches all over his suit. You can see the minor jump. Really overblown. And letterman’s reaction was fine. I remember seeing penn and teller for the first time and followed their tricks and especially enjoyed the repulsive ones. Then they got soft and Hollywood themselves.

I remember listening to this video a few years ago. I was gravely ill and thought I was going to die. I had some sort of respiratory illness that the doctors could not identity. It was like trying to breathe through a straw, I ran a constant fever, body aches and it lasted for almost 2 months. Well, anyways, I was scared to fall asleep and only could try and sleep on my knees because all other positions felt as though I was suffocating. Penn's voice seemed relaxing to me and had an ASMR quality about it. I played this 24/7. Obviously, I didn't die and 2 years has passed. Watching this now seems strange. Great story and letterman was the man

Don't waste your time watching. As noted, there aren't 1000's of roaches and Dave was not covered or all over him. Also saw zero evidence of roaches on or coming from Penn in any way, shape or form. I love P&T but this whole thing is BS

I don't really mind the fact that Penn's recollection of the events wasn't all that accurate. Yeah, I was slightly underwhelmed when seeing the actual clip, but knowing the background how that came to be (Letterman asking them to go as hard as they could) sure made up for it.
