I wonder what ancien technology could be added to it to make it more like a smartphone. Like, an abacus to make it a calculator, a mirror, a solar clock, an oil lamp for the torch. Stuff like that. Any ideas ?

I haven't seen any devices like that in historical sources so I don't know if they thought about it. I just called it like that in a thumbnail because of the screen-like look of the wax. I guess you could add a few more pages to the wax tablets so you have space for other devices. Thin abacus, a mirror and solar clock can be fit there. Viking "compass" also should fit fine. An oil lamp can work too but will definitely do damage to the "smartphone" if used. Small plumb line, ruler and square ruler also should be fitable to one of the pages. Of course this kind of a device won't be historically accurate but is fun as a fantasy experiment.

@@svartalfheim4753 Although I do like historical accuracy, I was indeed aiming for a fantasy experiment. LARPers like to get inspired by history but create original things. So I was wondering how far I could take it. Your entries are very interesting, never thought of adding a ruler and a plumb line.

I made one today, very basic from some scrap wood, not as nice looking as yours! Didn't realise you could thread through the wax. I used an iron oxide powder so my wax is red. Now I'm going to learn Latin Cursive for wax tablet writing on top of all that.

chaga is great but doesn't grow everywhere, for instance, we do not get it here in Australia, so the statement that it's the best tinder is erroneous. For me charred punkwood is pretty good, but I love nitrated bullrush fluff. For me, that is the 'best'.
@svartalfheim4753
@svartalfheim4753 Жыл бұрын
Nothing grows everywhere naturally so does it mean that there is no best tinder? Of course I use "best" to make it a bit clickbaity because it can be best only in some particular circumstances as well as nearly any other item. To be precise I mean european viking age, the Rus nothern territories, Scandinavia and norhern Europe. It's "best' because needs nearly no effort to make compared to other historical natural tinders. You just have to get it and let it dry. And of course it won't be best nowadays because of the huge amount of all sorts of fire starters, but even now it can be useful in some scenarios. It's especially good as a tea)

Thank you so much! Yes, it is toxic. But it's alright if you don't know about it) I think that using it for cooking spatulas is not enough to do any real harm and if something happens it's hard to identify what the real reason was. So I don't think they cared. I don't know exactly how this poison works so it's hard to tell but we know that it was used for all sorts of stuff, including cooking utensils.

@@oddthearcher7555 Yes, I would avoid using yew dishes. I don't think it's extremely deadly especially if the wood is dry and with coating but it's absolutely unnecessary. The niddy noddy should not be flat. It ought to have the curved arms at either end at right angles to each other. The Oseberg niddy noddy was squashed flat when the burial chamber collapsed, but originally the curved arms at each end were at right angles to one another. There are demonstrations of niddy noddy use which show how they should be set up. for example this one: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqKpfmmXpKefrZI A flat niddy noddy does not work properly for skein winding.

I love how it seems like much thought went into ensuring the spoons were comfortably to hold. The bowls on these spoons look easy to drink (slurp?) out of too. What sorts of tools did the Vikings use for measuring?
@svartalfheim4753
@svartalfheim4753 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, these "fancy" ones seem to be really well designed but there were also a lot of just straight spoons. It's even hard to tell if these are spoons or spatulas because there was nearly no bowl. But this type of comfortable curved spoons also can be found in many places. And about measuring. It depends on what exactly you'd like to measure and what for do you need it. There are a lot of scales finds but they are quite small so it looks like they were used for measuring "currency" weight, gold, silver. Gems or spices maybe. If we are speaking about volumes of liquid goods I think they used barrels or pots or whatever the merchant had. Sacks or bags for grains and just pieces for cheese or meat. And if it was a serious regular business volume of these "barrels" of course should be agreed on. And these volumes definately was a reason for many conflicts) Measuring system in general is a big theme for scientific research and really changes on an occasion. So I think that on individual level it was just on the spot agreement but the more serious the business gets the more standardised "weights" you should have but it's still an agreement, not standard.

@@svartalfheim4753 Flat wooden spoons used to come with individual serving iced creams; they were really useful for chopping any large chunks. Do you think intricate utensils would have been status symbols? I was thinking along the lines of like a cubit, but now you have me wondering what the most common Viking containers are too. Storage space/items seem to be something we take for granted nowadays, but my BIL has a travel chest that's a family heirloom from the Oklahoma land-runs.
@svartalfheim4753
@svartalfheim4753 2 жыл бұрын
@@paulspruill Flat spoons can be used for any food which is not liquid so I think they were quite common. Also it's really easy to make one, you just need a knife or an axe. Well, yes I think that such utensils could be a symbol of the owner's status because you can see that some were definately made by professional craftsmen. But to prove that properly you need them to be found in rich people burial inventories and we have problems with that. Usually these items are found on a town and port territories where the soil lets it happen, so I can just assume that they were quite expensive. Of course we have Oseberg burial mound and a few other big ones with lots of stuff but we need statistics to prove that. And about measuring devices. Well, it's hard to tell at least for me, because we need some documents or records to say something about their units and I don't now much about that actually. I'm more into historical material culture. I would guess that something like cubits, feet or palms were used. As I know nearly all Europe used something like that till 19-20 century, but that's just my guess. Maybe there is something in the sagas. Containers are a bit easier) We have archaeology here so there were all kinds of chests, buckets, barrels, baskets, sacks. Bentwood boxes were a thing in some places, birch bark boxes. Leather wallets and and flasks existed. And a lot of different pottery of all sorts of kinds and sizes. So nearly every carrying or storing task could be solved. Of course all these containers would look bulky, heavy and inconvenient for us but it doesn't mean they don't work)

I'm desperately looking for someone to popularise the rules and to make real tournaments. The rules I describe are in addition of the Copenhagen Hnefatafl rules : 1) First of all, black pieces aren't all the same. There are commanders on b6, f10, f2 and j6. Commanders may make a short orthogonal jump (no capture) over a white ordinary piece, black ordinary piece or the King too but a commander cannot jump over another commander. 2)All black pieces including the commanders cannot move to 5 and 7 squares so as to they can move to 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 squares. 3) The King may make a short orthogonal jump over a white ordinary piece from the throne. 4) There's no multiple capture. The player has to choose which piece to take. 5) The King can be blocked next to a corner square according to these 2 schemes : a) black pieces (ordinary or commander) are on a2 and c1, the King comes on b1 and a third black piece (ordinary or commander) (which is NOT from a2) comes on b2. If white didn't manage to free its King within 6 white moves, black wins. b) a commander or a black ordinary piece is on c1, the King comes on b1 and a commander from a2, b11 OR k2 comes on b2 (this scheme only applies when it's a commander and only if the commander comes from a square which is next to a corner square : a commander from a2, b11 or k2 in this case). If white didn't manage to free its King within 6 white moves, black wins. 6) Shieldwall rules : When pieces manage to surround other pieces in shieldwall next to a corner square, then the player has to choose which piece to take but, otherwise, if the shieldwall capture isn't next to a corner square, then all pieces are captured (the shieldwall corner capture only applies when white captures black pieces). 7) When the King is blocked on the edge of the board (not next to a corner square, so this rule doesn't concern a2, a10, b11, j11, k10, k2, j1, b1) by 3, if, after 15 white moves, white doesn't manage to free its King, then black wins. 8)There's a draw game in only 2 cases : a) a white ordinary piece and a black piece (ordinary or commander) repeat the same move 3 times except if white create a false edge fort (a fort where there's no movement of the King on the edge of the board) then white loses. b) black isn't able to surround completely white because of lack of pieces and white can't escape nor create an edge fort but white has 4 or more ordinary pieces. 9) Black wins if it manages to capture the King (by 4 or by 3 next to the throne or next to the corner following the previous rules), by surrounding white or if it didn't manage to surround white but it left 3 or less ordinary white pieces. 10) White wins : either its King reaches 1 of the 4 corners (a1, a11, k11, k1) or white manages to create an edge castle where the King moves on the edge safely following the Copenhagen rules. 11) Optional rule (play with or without this rule just to see which version you prefer) : King cannot move to 6 and 7 squares so as to he can move to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 , 10 squares.
