Is there a soil temperature where it's better to wait until spring?
@MoleReaperTraps8 күн бұрын
Nope. As long as you can get traps in the ground, moles can be caught. If the ground is frozen, you should wait till it thaws. I’ve caught moles with a few inches of snow on the ground. The snow acts as an insulator and keeps the upper level of soil thawed.
@TommyTester9 күн бұрын
So you took several traps away but left others. Help me understand that. I'd think you would reset the traps where they were and then when all activity stops, pull them all out. A video on that strategy would help us amateurs. Thanks.
@MoleReaperTraps9 күн бұрын
If I had fewer traps set I’d feel more comfortable resetting those traps that caught moles. But, since I had so many other traps in the ground in the area I chose not to reset those traps. From a business standpoint I set traps a little heavy when I initially set a yard. That way when i come back to check I rarely have to set anymore traps. I can just do a quick walk if the yard and move on. There would be nothing wrong with resetting those traps. In fact there are times where a single tunnel can produce multiple moles. This is a common tunnel that multiple moles are using. Resetting on tunnels like these is a great tactic and can yield great results. Mole trapping takes experience. I try to simplify it by just telling people to set on sign. It’s more important to get the traps in the ground properly versus in a tunnel that might catch your mole 5 hours sooner. There is no predicting a mole’s moves so no need to waste time trying to figure out their next move. More importantly just getting traps in the ground properly is most important. That’s why I highlight the setting process more than the theory. As you get more experience you will see a general pattern of how moles tend to work in your area.

I've watched all your videos. It was the work you did in this guys yard that opened my eyes to a few things. Firstly, you don't go around pushing down runs hoping the next day to identify where Mr. Mole might currently be active before setting traps. Others seem to do this because they may only have 1 or 2 $30 traps, and hope to isolate and catch Mr. Mole before the rest of the yard gets ruined. That can be frustrating if you guess wrong or if there are a bunch of moles. Your approach using 4-5 $10 traps right away in the most active looking areas of the yard, is clearly more effective as it can stop 2-3 active moles within hours and usually that is all of them - and with no new damage. Excellent. Secondly, you showed how to install them quickly and precisely, and usually in well under 1 minute. You clean out the entry holes and place a “bare trap” in-line with his existing run, with the trigger right where he would hit it. You don't flood the trap cavity with excess dirt or rely on a dirt bridge under the trigger pan like others - you mainly just insert the bare trap with the scissors straddling the entry holes, and use a top-covering of thatch to block light. By placing the trigger pan right in his face, Mr. Mole will naturally hit it and attempt to dig under it, easily setting it off with his fat head or fat body. No one else is doing that, and it obviously works. Excellent. Lastly, the “step on” and “hawk” type traps may seem easy to set, but you have no idea how well positioned the scissors, snare, or triggers are positioned in the actual run, especially the depth, thus more false triggers and tunnel-arounds. Your method places the scissors and the trigger right where they need to be, aligned with the existing entry holes and the trigger exactly in his normal path of travel. Excellent. Your 5-pack Home Defense Kit is a bargain, and is just what most of us home-owners need to take care of our mole problems quickly and effectively each year. Well done.

Thanks for the comment and compliments! As a homeowner it is ok to step down the runs to see where they are most active. But from a business standpoint in don’t have time for that. PLUS there is no guarantee that the mole won’t go back and revisit those older tunnels. They’ve put in the work to make them so they normally don’t completely abandon them.
@TommyTester10 күн бұрын
It's interesting the middle one was the one that triggered. Maybe you can talk about triggers where the mole got away and why. I just ordered your Home Defense kit after scoping out all the other brands.
@MoleReaperTraps10 күн бұрын
So that “run” along the fence was not necessarily just a single run. There could have been multiple runs that led to that run and also runs that run parallel to it. I bet if I had done probing on the other side of the fence I would have found way more Tunneling than on the side I set the traps on. When I train mole trappers I try to teach them to not get carried away trying to figure out where the tunnels go or why. The important thing is to get the traps in the ground properly and on a singular run (preferable a straight singular run). Sometimes we don’t have much to go on and we just have to get some traps in the ground. You may not catch them right away but they will eventually come back through the tunnel. Great observation!

curious. since there is more tension wont it cause more tension on trigger and pan thus making it harder for a mole to set off the trap?
@MoleReaperTraps2 ай бұрын
That’s a great question. The answer is no, not at all. This style trap design releases the dog very easily. It is still far easier to release compared to bigger traps like the Victor Out O Sight. All of my traps that I run in my mole trapping operation have been upgraded. Do you HAVE to use these spacers, no…. But it makes setting them faster because when you cycle the trap to make clearance the extra power means you generally only have to cycle it once and it will close under its own power. Another advantage is if it rains on your set and the dirt settles in you dont have to worry about the trap closing slowly and possibly missing the mole.

Putanges - ang as in anger, not angiogram. If you flatten one leg of the plier you can attach the plier to a lanyard or swivel on a length of cord so it is always to hand and doesn't get lost. Alternatively, some bright flourescent paint will show them up in the field.
