He was great inventor, and an interesting guy, but aren't we giving an awful lot of credit to otto on the assumption that no one else would have ever figured this stuff out?

I can see at 18 muinutes into the video durring taped review, that as he lowered his legs, he changed the center of mass. Sending him erratically out of control. Does a bird lower its legs before landing?

To reproduce the first flight with accuracy, you would need to reporduce not only the flight, but the mental attitude to it, to truly appreciate the accomplishment. You would need, in fact, a pilot who has never attempted any kind of flight, and who, in fact, does not know if such a thing is possible.

Already done in the 70s by hang glider pilots. Every one knew Otto was the first pilot. No hype needed.

This was very interesting to see.. I build simple RC planes out of foam board so this is super interesting to me…I may have to try to turn this glider into a RC model 🤔😁

No...a bird invented the wing. And so the parents of birds are the best flight inventors the world has ever seen. A small bird can fly non- stop across the Pacific..10000 kms on only renewable fuel. Man is still trying to achieve that.

Maybe contact the hang-gliding community next time? Towing is very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. Hang gliders tow to thousands of feet on pay out and static winches. The trick in to tow off the body of the pilot rather than the glider. There are various ways to do this. They work really well and they are very save, unlike the way you are doing it which killed a lot of pilots until it got figured out. I am assuming your pilot was a hang glider? Jesus, have some humility! It really helps save lives.

What's the difference between this and the hang gliders of today? For one thing, the current designs are simpler and lighter in weight, with a much better glide ratio. Skilled pilots can take off using the strong and steady updraft over the top of sand dunes next to the sea and soar up very high. You can find videos online taken from onboard cameras showing them climbing up 4,000 meters or more. The all-time altitude record without power or oxygen is so high, they assumed the woman who set it would be dead upon landing, but she wasn't. The limiting factor is not just oxygen, but the cold temperature. The noteworthy aspect of Lilienthal's glider is that it was the first that is known.

Even for inventing the hangliter I'll give him a single vote but flying just a little bit and a nonfailure, practical "flying machine" are separated by a pritty deep axe chop here! The Wright's and the Moon Landing are still real!
