Fun fact: I started like Season 9 with rowboat shenanigans and Ghost Forts would activate with my rowboat then

The chest of sorrows is not a chest i normally pick up the one time i do is when i have a rowboat and you can use it as a quiet keg (Will fill their ship) by docking a rowboat on a ship with chest of sorrows on it. Really funny seeing the crews at the fotd when the see their sunken boat.

You can indeed sever merge while you are near you ship. Me and a friend had about 600k with a reapers flag up and we were doing the harpoon rowboat selling to make it quicker and it merged in the hideout

I had always put off the explosive keg quests because my friends I played with were born without spines, but now I regret it entirely. It's now season 13, and I have yet to see a single black powder contract. Hostility to Rare increases daily, since Merchants is the one grind I actually enjoy, and now I have a commendation that's been rendered effectively impossible to complete.

Rare really need to change these commendations
