Kalk and any dosing must be done slowly and testing is crucial. Not sure who told you to dose kalk when all the tank has are a few frags. Water changes is all you need right now to get those parameters back slowly. Dont go dumping part b alk to get it back up in a day either.

1000% can relate. With my biggest and first freshwater. It was “poo poo galore” as my gf puts it. Everything I had that was thriving died because I let the floating plants overgrown and cyano literally made a layer above the water. I mistakenly put in one fish that ate all my community fish. That’s how it went downhill on my care. Months later. Facing my failure and guilt of overspending covid money. I restarted it and now it’s so consistent, I barely do anything to it. Can neglect and still thrive. Seeing my new success (and possibly better mental), currently piecing out my first saltwater build with the Cade 1500 in my living room. I know it’ll be a longer journey, but more rewarding. 4 freshwater, 1 salt. Thank you for your poetic narration

I completely relate. I fell into a similar period of despondancy. My only saving grace was I had already installed a 7 stage rodi in my house before hand. That said I didn't do a water change or scrape the glass for almost 6 months. It started after setting up my Rodi, adding another light and leaving the intensity the same, and changing salt brands all at the same time. My tank basically did a soft crash, I lost alot of nice stuff, and the rocks became covered in bubble algae, as well as all my Coraline algae bleached out.. So I just let it go. I was barely dosing, barely feeding my fish, and losing track of topping off the evaporation loss. I almost tore it all down and got rid of it. Funny part is after I stopped drowning in my sorrows, cleaned the glass and did a water change with a better salt( I had went from buying aquaforest pre mixed by the gallon from my Lfs, to using Fritz red box once I started making my own water; because the store I was buying my saltwater from closed down; to using Tropic marin Pro, the highest quality I could find) things albeit really dirty and mucky weren't really that bad. My parameters were all way off. But because I stopped alot of the nutrient input my nitrates and phosphates were zero. After turning the lights way down once the bubble algae farm started, alot of my remaining coral ended up actually growing a bunch, strangely enough. I am still a beginner, which is why I manually dose and top off. The total tank and sump volume is only like 70 gallons max, so it's manageable to do for now. My point is, like you said. It's never as bad as it seems, nature always finds a way to a new beginning. My algae is almost gone, my coral is growing, and I am caring for things properly again, or at least trying to. Of course, I got aptasia again after I started paying attention to things and feeding regularly, I guess because the nutrients started to come up a little. But I am slowly dealing with it. They are little by little declining. I just bought some berghia nudibranchs. But wouldn't you know it, as soon as I put in the nudibranchs I found those tiny little clear photosynthetic( Alcoel) flatworms on the glass...lol. but if I treat for them I will kill the Berghia Nudis. SoI am just being patient until the aptasia is either gone, or the flatworms get too bad, and then I'll use the flatworm exit to get rid of them. The lesson I personally learned from all of this is to be patient, not to force and try and rush things along. To just let Nature take its course. My tank actually proved this approach to be valid, because I had litterally just thrown my hands up....but instead of it all going to crap, it's actually quite beautiful right now. Not perfect, but doing quite well, way better than I would have thought it would be doing. I think the only thing that saved it was the good clean Rodi water I was using, like you said that's the foundation of the whole system. I hope to see future updates of your tank when it is back to it's former self and maybe even better than it was previously. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Also I know my situation wasn't as dire as yours, I just felt compelled to share about it after watching your video. I think the biggest thing I have taken away from my screw ups is you can't just buy a reef, it doesn't matter how much you spend on it, as all you will have is a checkerboard of frags and small store bought colonies. you have to grow it, by creating a healthy stable environment. This was a hard lesson for me, I thought I could just throw money at it and make it magically turn into a thing of beauty...definitely not the case. Thank you again for the Video, and God bless you Brother.

ATO and an auto feeder are my two must haves. Other than those two, and a heater, I'm low tech. No skimmer even. Less stuff to break. On the ATO, I just keep a 4 gallon bucket of RODI so it can't really overflow. Having an ATO and feeder lets me go out of town on the weekends with no worries.

Your tank was not consuming enough calcium. That increased calcium drove your alkalinity down.. In your case dose less Kalk. Dose alkalinity as well to keep that up. Do more testing if what your dosing.

Much appreciated and I will do that. Merry Christmas
@Arborpress23 күн бұрын
Technology helps when you need it but a lot of it isn’t necessary at all. I would say the only tech that you can’t go wrong with is an ATO. - remember for every comment/review you see of it flooding someone’s tank, there’s thousands of people that had no issue with it.

@jbslagoonreefАй бұрын
Good question. I plan to add corals into the tank soon as I get the nitrates below 30 ppm.

@@jbslagoonreef it will, for sure. The water change route will be pretty expensive for such a big tank coraline will consume it as well. Have you noticed any coraline growing at all?

Your tank has a few little frags. Do not dose yet. Add more frags and let them start growing. Weekly water changes do wonders.

You’re doing something wrong. I add kalk, actually almost every major retailer of corals uses kalk.
@bretthickman6 ай бұрын
Good advice. For most water changes at the beginning of a new tank is more than enough. Best practice is to dose Kalk with a PH controller and dose pump. Test frequency at the beginning to determine whether you are dosing enough or not, then adjust accordingly.

If ur calcium jumped that much I can only imagine the dangerous Ph and alk spike. U can’t dose too much kalk because your ph will go to 12+. I max out my tanks ph to 8.4 (from 7.8) before my calcium even goes up 50. I think u are overdosing .. need to monitor ph.

Just bought Sea-90 livestock salt and have used it in my pond. It's the same chemical composition as the Sea-90 sea salt for aquariums but at a lower cost (I paid $35 for a 50lb bag at my local livestock store) as it is less refined (cleaned/washed) and is coarser grade. The Sea-90 mineral salt fertilizer is the same thing as well as the food-grade Sea-90. Just a matter of having a certain quality grade for the intended use. I have brackish fish. Te Sea-90 livestock salt has made my fish colors pop and has not resulted in aquatic plant death as some of my other aquarium marine salts have caused due to a higher concentration of sodium chloride.
